Week nine of the renovations at the farm! The granite column features get lime pointed. The floor is poured and ties everything together! Window and door is fitted and the secret garden courtyard is cleared out nicely.

About Girl Meets Farm:
I’m Christine. I started this journey in search of my forever farm in Portugal, and now I have found it!
This is my adventure as a solo expat on a farm in Central Portugal with my two fur-kids, Shakti & Shiva.
I’ve never owned or lived on a farm, but moved to Portugal in the hope of fulfilling a life-long dream of finding open space, subsistence farming and a safer, better life.
Now that we have found our farm, the second stage of our journey begins!
I have to figure out farm life while renovating an agricultural structure to make it habitable and turn it into a comfortable home for me and my furkids.
Thank you for joining our journey!

Wrong window installation !
Your secret garden looks amazing! So cute and cosy. I saw Nick (Project Portugal) made beautiful calcada (almost finished), I'm totally in love! Maybe it would be more practical than grass, considering the rainy season you have over there? And it's sooo Portuguese 😅. Just an idea. Cheers 💗
Your farm looks beautiful 😍
I love the 'peek a boo' granite walls…absolutely gorgeous!
It is really becoming a home! Congrats! Also in addition to using well water I would add another one of those water containers and collect the water from the rain by using your gutters to collect the rain and put it into another water container! That would be great for showers rain water is really wonderful for your hair! In addition it could provide back up! We do that a lot here in the United States! We use it for gardening and also for indoor or outdoor showering! By the way are you going to have an outdoor shower and or an outdoor kitchen?
I would put a permanent cover over the entrance to keep rain and bad weather off the door and you as you enter! Also keep hot sun off entrance door and protect the entrance! I have that at my home and all my neighbors say they wish they had done it!
If you plant grass in your secret garden you’re gonna have to mow it! Why not put down stone or Flagstaff and potted plants or a border of plants! Then it will be much less maintenance
Looking good 🙂
👍🍀💐
👍
You can always use the well water and install a filter system. It will probably be cheaper and better for you health wise in the future. Just a suggestion, I really like your videos keep them coming
Looks so beautiful dear….you can see the finished room now. Your courtyard is also inviting. Be proud of all you are accomplishing. Good Luck on the rest…love seeing all the progress.
L🤩😍king absolutely fabulous!
I love that you keep the stone pillars showing. I would of kept the wood over the door and window showing also , the room need that pop! But overall the room is looking good. Love the hidden courtyard also.
Christine, well done. It’s easy for someone like me today go off grid and dig a well, get solar etc etc but I’m not paying the freight , great your exploring all your options. Having been stationed in Spain and Portugal when I was a junior officer in the RCN, the delays waits etc were mind blowing. I’m glad your keeping your chin up, I exploded and waited even longer for things. How come you chose a shower over a tub/shower combo, again being a serving sailor I take enough showers on ships that when on terra German I want a tub. Take care🇨🇦
that’s going to be a nice room with your secret garden en-suite 😊 Love the feature columns, they add so much charme to the room and connect with the history of the house. Imagine this finished in spring 🦋🌷🌸!
Love love love the progress!!! I am so happy for you!
When I saw the wooden beam over the door, I also thought that is a gorgeous feature. Doesn't have to be too pricey, and looks amazing 🙂
This coming week is going to be a big one! Looking forward to catching up on the progress.
Getting there.
hello ! your house its coming better every day i like the stone colums , its very rustic..
Everybody is saying it. 😀But yes the columns do look great. It's probably granite.
Stuff where statues are made from. (and Portuguese walls).
Lots of excellent progress and it looks wonderful!
Wow! Outstanding progress! Love the secret garden and the glass patio door! Looking great! Sorry about the administrative problems. Dame stuff happens here in Costa Rica! So frustrating!
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love you, you are getting there better put a wood burner you have your own wood and put the IBC on higher box if the water is higher it gives more water pressure.
I am so glad you didn’t divide that room as it works so well with the light flowing in. In anticipation of flies and mosquitoes a nylon mosquito screen stretched over a simple wood frame can be fitted against where the green shutters close, leaving the deep sill for a cat to lie in or a shelf for a potted plant etc. This addition could be removed during winter months for a clear view of your secret garden and beyond.
Those columns look so beautiful pointed. Your room is going to be just lovely, and I can only imagine how that little courtyard will look when you’re done with it. I can see your desk against the wall near those doors to the courtyard. The sunlight streaming in those doors and the window. Quite the retreat.
Ahh looking soooo coool…luv it
Hello Christine, Did you end up not needing to enlarge the bathroom? Love the columns!
Wow Christine the room is really coming along! It’s going to be super beautiful when you have finished! Take care Laura 🐶🐶❤️❤️❤️
So Christine I’m glad you are happy so far with the Reno, I just admire your patience. I know I’ve been through Reno’s and after the suggested deadline I get so anxious I just am not happy with delays after that. The thing that bugged me with what I saw at your place is the mess they made with the shutters. Why can’t those people wipe down the mud when they are done. I had the same thing done with my back screen door. I just hate construction crew. They could have asked me to do it. Now I have specks all over my screen door. Stupid men!!!!
You are building a ground-floor shower, why do you want to put a shower tray? You would be much better off having a walk-in shower, I.e flat floor. I suspect your municipal water application delay is due to the habitation license because municipal water is generally for habitation usage and they don't want it used for irrigation. This is a little bit of South African logic, greetings from KZN Umhlanga Rocks, South Africa.
You mentioned planting grass in your "Secret Garden", won't that be difficult to mow?
Irrespective of the water source make sure the potable water is tested for pathogens and mineral content
Another week of excellent progress👏🏽 The glass doors bring in so much light, and the courtyard is going to be a fantastic secret garden when you put the plants in. Have you considered planting lavender or other aromatics to bring the scent into the bedroom? I really look forward to your Sunday updates!
Wow! It’s really coming together, looks so good! Hope you can make friends with your neighbor when she sees how beautiful her next door neighbors home has turned out. 😉❤️
The oranges look delicious 😊
How lovely and green everything looks after the rain and the toadstools look like something out of a fairytale story!
Orange trees also fully laden and beautiful.
You sure are right when you say that so much has happened during the last week.
Hope you will get your water mains connected in a 'surprisingly ' fast time!
The building team never ceases to amaze. What super progress and all coming together well now.
The plaster and pointing work ….excellent. Glad for you that those marble columns turned out exactly as you had envisaged from the start.
Beautiful feature.
The window and door surely look good already, even though still to be finished off.
Love the very apt name 'Secret Garden' and the area is going to be so well used, I can sense😊
Well done!
Farmer for fun YouTube channel will know someone that can do the borehole. You could ask him. There is also OK Portugal YouTube to see if they know someone. Love the progress made so far.
Wow! Quite alot has been done since last week. They are doing such a beautiful Job! I love the pointed rock feature It really looks beautiful! The patio looks amazing! I can't wait for more! It's exciting!🙂👍👍🇨🇦
The stone columns are beautiful !
Hi Christine that room is starting to look nice with that door and window let’s a lot of light in looking forward to the finish.😊
Hi Christine. The columns look amazing, nice to have history in your walls. Your courtyard off the bedroom, lovely place to have a coffee and breakfast. Floor level and signatured…. So much achieved, you have a great set of builders, to use for your future projects. 😀 Enjoy your space, you will be moved in once power is fixed. The sun coming in through the door so bright. Stay safe, chill for a bit and have a good week ahead.
Great video and update, it's looking fantastic! Look forward to seeing the inside walls and doors finished..
Cheers from London 👍🏴🇬🇧
It is not often I am happy to get bills,,, but I was happy to receive both my portugueses water and power bill, this week,, as I was starting to worry, if I had managed to have them moved over in my name. So getting the bills gave me hopes that I will not come back to No power and water. 🙂
💙💙
Excited to see such good progress on your renovation. It really looks great. Those pointed columns are such a fantastic feature! Congratulations!!!
Hi Chris, blimey if it takes 9 weeks to get a quote for a door, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you if you order from that Company. Love that you are leaving the original stone, it will be stunning when it’s pointed and painted white between the stones. 🎉 Tony 🇬🇧 xx
OK kiddo, I'm confused. Don't you have water from your covered well already piped to the house? Question 2….Why go to the trouble of lugging an IBC tote around or worrying about algae growth if you have a water source that could be plumber directly to the house? I understand the cost of a bore hole but if you have a source that you trust for washing and showering why not plumb it to the house till the city water is available? BTW….The house is looking wonderful. Throw some paint or varnish on the temp door to help it withstand the weather.
