The clay walls are "Adobe" you have them in the US and Mexico as well. The important point about them is to not let them get wet from the top so they must have tiles on top to shed the rains beyond the surface and base of the walls. Don't forget to consider some of the areas towards the North of Portugal such as above Coimbra and up into the Serras such as Serra da Estrela which is really beautiful especially in the winter with the snow.

Truth be told, I haven't liked any of the homes you have looked at, just looks like way too much work and the ground is sandy and dry. I would be looking at a more green area but I guess that is because have lived in thailand since the mid 60's. But I do enjoy your journey and wish you all the luck in finding the right spot.

If you leave your property you could leave it to a workaway'er 🙂 or hire someone to live on your land who can also help with the b and b

Hello from WA to you two lovely people. I'm so curious, does it seem like the counsels in these places everyone looks at, are too unadventurous, too lazy or too old and set in their ways to look to the future and bring in a younger generation to bring life back into these abandoned land sites? I keep asking myself "why did these people leave their homesteads? Too old to work the land? No children that wanted any part of it? Did WWI or WWII wipe out the healthy men that would have owned these lands? I should delve into the history of Portugal to see what could have been the reason these homesteads were left behind so many years ago. You are right Drew about the land being a fire hazard that could be changed with proper upkeep. Either head South or head North closer to civilization where you could get supplies to bring something back to life. If children are in your future you surely will need to factor that into your search. Keep your heads up, we are all rooting for you. Hugs from the whole world, does that help? I hope so.
