I was walking around Sofia at the Lyulin market (where we had a great lunch for just over $2) and tried to find my way to the neighborhood Krasna Polyana, which is said to be a bit of a rougher neighborhood but in no way a slum. However, it borders with one of the most dangerous areas in all of Bulgaria – the infamous gypsy slum named Fakulteta. We tried to avoid entering that area at all costs but it seemed impossible for us to walk to Krasna Polyana without going through the entire gypsy slum on the way.
Everyone we met along the way told us to not go there, especially not by foot. Either rent a taxi or take a bus. But we decided to walk there instead. Some locals pointed us in the direction of what we thought was going to be a short walk but it turned out to be well over two hours of walking around the city and including through a forest.
Once the streets no longer had any names or addresses and each house was guarded by massive pitbulls and rottweilers, sewer smell everywhere, and everyone started staring, we knew something was wrong and decided to head back. Maybe one day we’ll return and visit Krasna Polyana, but next time we’ll take the bus!
