Home Resorts Future Options for Lisbon Portugal Airport – Portugal Travel

  1. This thing goes much further back, some 16 years ago it was officially declared that the new airport would be in Ota, near Alenquer. Private investors bought land, started building apartment blocks, schools, etc. My son attended a school in Torres Vedras that was opened on the expectation that Torres Vedras would grow a lot because of the new airport. Next to that school is a huge area of mostly abandoned urban infrastructure for habitation buildings that ended up never being built. Lots of people lost a lot of money because of the "ghost" airport in Ota. Then in 2008 the government said "we've changed our minds, Ota isn't a good location after all, we're now investigating the viability of building the airport in Alcochete". It was a catastrophe for all the people who had already started investing in all the areas that would benefit from the Ota airport. Now no one believes in anything until an airport is actually built.

  2. Thank you Joric for this information. Apparently the end result result isn’t imminent. The hills and flight path in Lisbon are major concerns for us so at this juncture, living options in Lisbon proper (with a few exceptions) appear limited. As such, we’re considering communities that are outside (but accessible) to Lisbon—basically our current life style. We’re a quick ferry ride away from San Francisco and that works great for us. Thanks again for your response to my questions. 🙏🏻 👍🏻

  3. Just wondering why the government would build a 2nd airport across the tagus when there is already an active airport at Alverca , Loures and has
a train station alongside the runway .
Do u know whether this was ever considered in the recent past ?
If they do decide 2 expand
across the tagus what about connectivity to Lisbon surely they would have to build another bridge / tunnel allowing the metro make a direct connection ?
    Love to hear ur thoughts.
    Thx again .

  4. I just flew into Lisbon Thursday night and I thought it was one of the nicest airports I’ve ever been too. I didn’t have any trouble or notice anyone else running into problems, but I arrived at midnight and the place was almost empty, so maybe that’s why.

Interesting to find out there’s some problems with it though. I guess my departure flight might be another experience. I’ll update this comment a few weeks from now in case anyone is curious.

  5. Boston’s Logan international went through an expansion a few years ago…. The chaos was horrendous while construction was happening, it affected everything. Now an expansion at the international terminal is going on again, I’ll see how it’ll affect entering from France even though we have global entry. My point was, but didn’t make the connection, that expansion of exiting airports is very chaotic but sometimes it’s the only way.
