I know I’ve been going on about wine a lot, but I don’t want you to think I drink it all the time. No, because I love beer as well! And there are some wonderful Portuguese beers, ideal for slaking your thirst on yet another glorious sunny day.
Two brewing companies – Ucer and Centralcer – control about 90 per cent of the market and the most popular type of beer in the country is pale lager; with ABV ranging from 4.4 to 6.6%. All brands are available bottled but not always on draught. The big sellers are Sagres and Superbock, while another great favourite is Cristal. This is readily available in bottles but is a rare delicacy if you manage to find it on draught.
There are signs of a growing interest in microbreweries, brew pubs, and artisan beers. In fact, the very first Algarve Beer Fest was held in June 2014 in the town of Albufeira, and it looks like it could spark off a craft beer revolution. And if you like a side order of history with your amber nectar, Lisbon’s beer museum is an absolute must see.
Remember, there’s no such thing as a bad beer, some are just better than others!
