Óbidos has everything; which is probably why it is one of the best known and most visited parts of the Silver Coast.

It has picturesque history: the ancient town is like a citadel surrounded by medieval castellated walls and yet it operates like any other normal modern town.

It has natural beauty: the breathtaking Óbidos Lagoon is surrounded by miles and miles of untouched forests, unspoilt secluded beaches, and superb fishing spots; its calm waters making it a favourite weekend destination for families and water sports enthusiasts.

And it has some of the best championship golf courses in Portugal: Praia del Rey, Royal Óbidos, and Bom Sucesso are highly popular with both professionals and amateurs from around the world.

Add to this the friendly locals in the various cobbled-street villages; the numerous festivals – at Christmas the castle area is transformed into a fairy-tale winter wonderland; and the superb cuisine; and it’s no surprise that it receives thousands of visitors ever year.

And as if all this isn’t enough, don’t forget to try the delicious local cherry liqueur known as Ginja. This is usually served in a chocolate cup, so also make sure you don’t miss the annual Chocolate Festival. Delicious!
