In this video I will go over the hidden costs you may experience if you are moving to Portugal or moving abroad in general. There are various costs that can come up. My goal was to help you consider some of these costs so that you may be better prepared. These were cost I learned along the way, when moving to Portugal.
Have you register to the Moving Abroad Summit?

Thank you
NIF – Número (number) de Identificação (identification) Fiscal (fiscal) (easy if you understand the meaning of the letters)
SEF – Serviço (service) de Estrangeiros (foreigners) e Fronteiras (borders)
Hello Driven Spice. You may remember me commenting on a video you posted recently (Feb. 2021). I live in Oeiras, 2 or 3 train stops west of Caxias. I have shared your videos with a colleague of my sister who intends to move here sooner than later. You are providing good information here.
It sounds like you may to put aside at least in $1,000.00
There is a couple on here that moved there with 2 children.
You have "clients"?
Hair is so cyooot!
SEF website is available in english: https://imigrante.sef.pt/en/.
Regarding banks, there are portuguese online banks: https://www.activobank.pt/web_pages/abrir-conta-bancaria-online.html, https://www.bancobest.pt/enu/HomePage and https://www.big.pt/AboutUs/AboutUs?option=movie
Regarding the Air BnB movement, and because the high raise of Air BnB sites in Lisbon, leading the a lack of accommodation for locals and higher prices, Lisbon's town hall (municipality) froze new Air BnB in some areas of Lisbon.
Regarding universities, they are open and running. When the pandemic reached Portugal, all classes moved into online environment.
You'll get some portuguese and english documents if you get arrested. 🤣🤣
There are public (free) portuguese courses for immigrants: https://www.acm.gov.pt/-/como-posso-frequentar-um-curso-de-lingua-portuguesa-para-estrangeiros-
My mom is looking for a place to retire. I like how genuine you seem. Some people come across as selling their experience, whereas, you seem to be just telling yours while encouraging people to share theirs, so everyone's learning. Thanks! I can't wait for covid to be over because watching videos really make me want to visit. My mom is split between Porto and Lisbon.
Thank you for posting this…!!! I am retired military and seriously considering relocating long-term to either Portugal or Panama… but not seeking employment. Both locations have 'pros & cons' and I have been to both (love the Pensionado program in Panama and the 180-day stay) — but only to visit for a week or so. I am looking for a slower, more relaxing environment where I can travel around on my motorcycle and visit different countries and experience different environments. For me, the main attraction for Panama is that its only a few hours flight back to Texas; whereas Portugal is more like 10 hours…!!! Would love to get more info on housing and cost of living in/around the Algarve region. Any tips/advice you can provide in relation to that area will be greatly appreciated!
what were the reasons people were deported?
Hi Cinnamon
You mentioned that you use Santander Bank in Portugal. We are looking at the same bank as well. Do you have a Santander US bank account as well? If so, is it easy to manage across both accounts online and is it fairly seamless (exchange rates aside) to transfer money between accounts seamlessly?
Thank you for what you do. Maybe when we move to Portugal next year my wife and I can buy you lunch.
When we applied for our Spanish visas, the email we got from the consulate said we should not buy any plane tickets until we had our visas in hand.
They live in the silver coast, Our Rich Journey.
Tks, I believe that for retirement Portugal 🇵🇹 is not easy due to the money exchange rate , if your retirement package is 100k a year you will lose 15k reduced to 85k and from their you pay rent, food, medical 🚑 it seems for a retire it doesn't pay, I will look at other places that my funds are not getting decreased in the exchange 😉 thanks for making me understand. Good luck 👍 to you 🤗
Hi, would it have been easier and cost effective if u had hired an immigration attorney in Portugal to help u with all the requirements?
Hey 👋 hello, can you give a estimate on about how much it may cost a person to organize for the year or more you need to have to complete residency approvals for my permanent residence, you see I am retired and would like to know how much I should have on hand or in bank to be comfortable to complete everything 🤔 😅 just give a reasonable figure it would be a great help for me. Thanks
We also had private health insurance but our it was paid by the our work companies. What we had was not alot because we still had to pay upfront when we went to a hospital and later fill in a form to get our money back. So just check your insurance.
Hello Cinnamon, sorry I missed you live, I was flying. I learn something new from your videos every time. Hang in there, you will be fine in your SEF appointment. I totally understand what you mean about the loneliness. When I moved to Canada I knew no one and I cried myself to sleep many nights. It got better as I made friends so you will be just great!! It was much better when I moved to the US!! What? 8 Euros!! I can't!!
The pandemic complicates everything with travel or international moves…
Who did you use for insurance? who does Santander bank recommend? Thanks for all the info.
Thank you for reminding us all that we need to approach our move with curiosity, follow through, and sometimes… humor. If we don’t, we will have a hard time. Remind yourself to laugh!
You cracked me up on this as like me, pronouncing these names can be vexing! Invaluable information and you look extra pretty today. Rock on, T x
Love watching you on these lives! Your whole personality comes through and it cracks me up.
The air conditioning question- A/C is generally not widely used in most European countries. It can also be expensive to install so that could be a factor. Not having A/C makes sense in places like Sweden, UK, etc as the weather is usually cooler & summers are short & in the U.K. for instance, barely hot.
Even where summers are super hot eg Valencia it’s not that long. 3 months max. Lots of Europeans also travel to the coast or cooler areas during hot summers. A/C is just not a thing.
We are trying to get our appointment for the D7 visas, how do we get our your list for the Portuguese lessons?
Cinnamon said she is NOT a relocation agent 😂
I found the healthcare that Santandar bank provides
https://www.santander.pt/seguros/seguros-saude/safecare-saude
You can Google translate it.
Pretty interesting…Healthcare is the US is so overpriced, it's a crime
I enjoy listening to you sharing your experiences of moving and living in Portugal. Are you in a small town, Cascias? In Cascais you have the best of both worlds. You have the ocean close by and you can get to the city centre within a short time.
Enjoy your new life! I am excited for you.
I am still hoping to spend a few months there when things quiet down. I travel with a Canadian passport and so there aren’t any COVID related restrictions on Canadian travelling to most of Europe.
Stay safe and please wear a mask when out in public🙏
Great information. You are awesome
Omg. When you were talking about health insurance I was ROLLIN…😂😂😂😂😂
Laundry facilities, fitness center, places of worship, University…weekend events, typical store hours (24/7), driving, public transportation, etc…just thinking out loud. Lol
You sound totally committed to this relocation!! Btw I'm here in the DMV and really want to do stints (long weekends in another area… because it's only 3 hours air) Do you have a 2, 5 year plan or are you taking it ..one year at a time 🤔🤔🤔
Hey Cinnamon,
When you wing it with explaining the process it seems more real to me and gives me an idea that things may get a little confusing. ❤️ So please continue jumping on here and giving folks information as you’re able to share. I appreciate it. I’ve been grabbing my pen and journal and just add new info you throw our way to the research I’ve done and everything else you’ve shared.
I registered for the summit but because I’m a school teacher going back in the classroom next week 😩 I won’t be able to register for upgraded sessions.
The rest of this is just in case anyone wants to offer experiences they’ve had.
My biggest challenge right now is timing.
I’m trying to time when to submit applications to the DC office (that’s the one I’m zoned for) so it coincides with my summer holiday next year and subsequent sabbatical or early retirement. I‘ll be doing D7 but independent living.
I’m also downsizing and want to put my house on the market so it sells in good time, and for good money 🤞🏾 so I can have it to sustain me for years. I live frugally so I should be able to make it work. Again 🤞🏾.
I’ve gotten some good information from Our Rich Journey regarding timeline and visas so I have a ‘general’ idea how long things are taking. Operative word is general.
Hoping things change for the better for everyone (regarding the pandemic) and your future plans. ❤️

Very informative thank you.👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
What about income tax? If you are a US citizen and live in Portugal with a D7 visa, which country do you pay income tax too, USA or Portugal or both?
Very informative. You have answer a lot of my question and cleared up confusion. Thank you and look forward to learning Portugal.
For what reasons would someone get deported?
52:58 hahaha Cinnamon is showing her true colors. Love it! Thank you so much, you are very generous and I (We) appreciate all you do and the generous resources provided ❤️❤️
Great video! Love your honesty. You not answering the easy to 'google it' questions had me cracking up!
The bank has nothing to do with health insurance. They just make it easier so you won't have to be running around somewhere else getting the health insurance. Remember because we have an American mindset we're not used to things being done this way. But Portugal is not the United States of America. Just like with the health insurance is cheaper every where else in the world except the United States of America. Maybe that's why so many people wanna move out of the United States.
