How Did We Get Our Renovation "Skills"? – ASK #005

Our Portugal renovation project is our biggest yet – partly due to the size of the house and partly down to the added complexity of restoring the 3800m2 piece of land. However, this is not our first rodeo. Our renovation and DIY experience started (for Kylie at least) in 2005.

Join us in this video for a bit of Q&A and a mini flashback to some of our past projects and a catch up of what we’ve done on our current project so far.

  1. For the flooring problem, not sure what heating system you're trying to use, but you could install underfloor heating with aerothermia. When you account for the 5 cm of insulation in the floor, plus the pipes for the hot water and then the layer of concrete, you have around 10cm height + your finishing flooring of choice.

  2. I’m pretty good in all phases of construction (I’m a roofer), but when I rebuilt a house here in Florida I didn’t know about plumbing. So ( before YouTube) I read some books and got a lot of information from plumbers on the construction site. When it came to the other trade that I not only know nothing about, I wouldn’t even attempt and that’s electric. Thank my brother is a master electrician, so no problem. But like you two, just go for it and learn as you go. Always watching from Panama City Florida, USA. 🇺🇸. No Snow Just Breeze!

  3. I loved this video. It was amazing to see the transformation of your previous properties and the skills you've acquired doing them. Your previous transformations were so tastefully done. How do you maintain such a rigorous work?

  4. Ive got an 125 year old house in Western NY whose two sided porch needs to be restored. Because workers are scarce or want to much money I’m proceeding with the improvements myself. The unknown is scary but as long as I try to work safe I continue to progress.
We will never know what we are capable of unless we push ourselves just a bit.

  5. What an amazing journey you both have been on all these years. You both are so talented and willing to learn new skills. What a wonderful life you have created for yourselves.

  6. The curse of the perfectionist is indeed a curse I have it too. It is being reported here in Aus that Portugal is having the worse fire storms are you two any where near them I hope not !!! Lana Australia.

  7. Would there be anyone in your area that could give you advice? I'm thinking most of the homes are stone and/or brick – Wonderful work ethics – sure put me to shame – Thank you for sharing –

  8. Kylie, you rock, girl! Really impressive! Wish I had learned some of those real skills you got under your belt when I was younger instead of this academic fancy, shmanzy crap (in my case "town planning"). Never built a town in my life, with your skills, I almost could have… I did a bit of a self-built in my 20s, mostly just winging it (and friends giving advice). No youtube back then.

  9. Great explanation. Lots of hard graft behind you and lots more ahead. The school of hard knocks!

I am really curious how or if you plan to insulate the walls and ceiling house? Are you going to use a copoto application on the exterior – cork or mineral wool? I don't think that you'd use styrofoam.

  10. WOW what an amazing ride you two have been on. I have to agree with Kylie you can watch and watch but until you actually do it, that is when the learning comes. When it is all said and done you guys will sit back with your glass of wine and smile at what you have accomplished. What wonderful pride you will hold in your hearts. Great video thanks for sharing.

  11. Having seen what you did in the past, I can’t wait to see how you complete this stone house. Well done on your approach. Doubt I’d have your resilience but well up for having a go at new things. No doubt ongoing challenges ahead though I think you both thrive on those.

  12. You have lots of shist and greywacks in the walls, you are probably in a area with those types of stones. Why not try to see the local stone mason and have a look in slabs of those materials to the doorways?

  13. You are addicted to renovations 😁 I do a lot of my work selflearning like u do. Is better than have someone just doing bad work and no love in what their doing. Congratulations for you resilience. Keep it up 💪🍀
