How Gibraltar Became British

Gibraltar is a tiny British territory at the southern edge of Spain. They run themselves like an independent country, and yet they enthusiastically wish to remain with Britain… but also in the EU. How did this all happen?!

  1. Fun fact: Gibraltar 🇬🇮 is named after the Arabic name "gabal tariq" ( جبل طارق ) which means "the mountain of Tariq" and Tariq or Tariq bin Ziyad is the name of the Muslim commander who have conquered the Peninsula

  2. In late summer and early Autumn of 1991 I worked in Gibraltar for four weeks. I just loved it there it was most amazing experience I had as eighteen year old. I went to this pub that was located in the Marina district. The barmaids started to climb on the bar and sing "I will survive" I was amazed. I was a Smoker at that point in time. There were cigarette pack for a pound in the vending machines. I felt like being in U.K but in a strange way but lovely and sunny. When they have rain OMG I never seen rain like just hit the ground with such force 😱. I loved my time there at The Caleta Hotel Gibraltar. There was this amazing restaurant loved it at the Caleta Bay. I remember I asked what helicopter and speed boat doing following this other boat was it drugs smuggling. The waiter smiled and laughs he said not drugs as such I said what in amazement he there smuggling Tobacco. Wow I thought. Yes I loved my time there the people were so lovely and kind. I never forget my four weeks there. In a way I would love to live there still a person can dream.

  3. Gibraltarian here! Love that you are spreading more awareness about Gib, its an amazing place that many people (even brits) dont know about. Would definitely recommend it for anyone considering visiting, though I am biased 😂

  4. Because Britain is not Russia. Britain can invade countries even if they don't plan to put foreign nukes along your borders. And it also doesn't matter whether they had historically been one or not.

  6. John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

  7. ..because Britain was a power-hungry empire. Looting and harvesting the riches of their colonies. They made India their milking-cow and until now the heritage treasures of India are still being kept in British museums. It was that empire who caused so much havocs and disorientation that we still experience now.

  8. All good, however, you forgot to mention that the UK expanded the territory of Gibraltar (twice) in breach of the Treaty of Utrecht. Also the treaty is a lifetime lease to the British but the jurisdiction of the territory was never given to the British. Finally Gibraltar is included by the UN in the list of territories to decolonize, however an independent Gibraltar would go against the treaty so it can only be British or Spanish

  9. Thank you so much for making this video, I’ve lived in Gibraltar since I was 1 and although it’s popular a lot of people still think it’s a fairy tale 😂

  10. Some facts about Gibraltar.

-When you fly between the UK and Gibraltar is mandatory to ask clearance to the spanish air control

-When you can not land in Gibraltar due to the weather, you divert to Málaga airport

So Gibraltar is not 100% british
