You will be surprised at how much it actually cost us to move to Portugal. Yes, we changed our life! Sold it all and moved to another country. Have you ever thought about giving up on the American Dream. Well we finally decided to do just that. We chose to downsize our life into one we could afford in retirement. And that has taken us to where we live now on the Island of Madeira in Portugal. Let’s go. It’ll Be fun!

In this video we are off to Socorro. My new favorite place on the island of Madeira. We hope you enjoy. The music in the video was composed, performed and edited by Scott Gorsuch, my little brother.

Let us know if we can help you.

  1. Hi Alan and Leslie, I watch your video with interest! I’m from Vancouver, Canada and I moved to Madeira last month. Well I can tell my husband and I we don’t find to be that fun 😂! First of all we find it quite cold during the nights, no one in their video mentioned this aspect. People should know that Madeira weather is not like Mexico weather if this is important for them. Another thing no one is speaking about is the beautiful sky full of stars during the night, it’s magical! I wish we can meet in one day!

  2. You often talk about your son. I'd love to hear how it's been for him (age/school/language) and all that. We have a child and by the time we may venture into something like this he'll be around 15-20 so it's very important for us that everyone is happy including our boy. Obrigado

  3. Alan, hi, I follow your shows, find them quite meditative, thanks….Madeira certainly is an awe-inspiring Island and a great, safe and peacefull place to live and to bring up kids…glad you found it.

  4. Thank you Alan and Leslie!!!!!! Texas loves you!!! Originally from Illinois….So very proud of your journey!!! Appreciate the costs that you have stated!!! This is Gold!!! God Bless you both!!!

  5. Interesting, Alan & Leslie. When we moved to Norway in 1980, we were just kids of 31 and 30 respectively. Vi visited the Norwegian consulate in Vancouver, and were told to talk to the immigration authorities when we arrived in Molde, Norway. There were no visa fees, and nothing was put in writing. We then bought return tickets to Norway because that was cheaper than one-way tickets. The return portion was never used. We sent 13 boxes by surface mail, that arrived several months after we did. Our luggage consisted of one backpack each, within the 20 kg weight limit. Everything else we owned was either given away to family and friends, or sold at a garage sale.

  6. Hi Alan and Leslie, First of all we would like to say THANK YOU for your great channel. My wife and I enjoy it very much . Unfortunately, we missed your live show and opportunity to ask you a question. Healthcare is the most concern for us, not that we are not healthy, but with everything with what happening with the system in US, it is very discouraging. I hope I can ask you a question here. I know, that the Madeira and Azores have a different public healthcare system than mainland Portugal.
What if you apply for D7 visa and after several years realize that the island life is not what you imagine and would like to move to mainland Portugal. What happens with public healthcare? Thank you in advance , Simeon. P.S We are a big fans of yours!!!!! 🙂

  7. Bom dia! I’m looking forward this this. I’m deep in the process right now. What to keep, what to sell, what to ship. I have a quote from a relocation company and it’s double what I thought it would be. I’m aiming to cut it in half (there are family treasures I just can’t part with). I have questions about paper items like – tax returns, printed photos, dear letters. I’ve no time to digitize it all! What do people do about those things? So many more questions… I’ll be watching tomorrow! Obrigada 🤗
