About us: We are from the USA and have moved to the beautiful Island of Madeira in Portugal. We are very grateful to have this opportunity. We have put together this channel to talk about our journey. We hope to help you with yours.
Have you ever thought about giving up on the American Dream? Well we finally decided to do just that. We chose to downsize our life into one we could afford in retirement. And that has taken us across the world.
Are you thinking about moving abroad, becoming expats or immigrating? Or maybe you are moving to Portugal or Madeira Portugal. Each week we talk about our journey to retirement, in moving to Portugal, moving to the Island of Madeira and our new experiences. We also answer questions from our viewers!
In case you do not know, the Madeira Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean about 325 miles west of Morocco and 625 SW of Lisbon.

Beautiful video thank you
In Norway, I notice a trend among certain retirees to upsize, rather than downsize. They sell relatively large, but inexpensive, family houses, often in more remote locations, and buy relatively small, but expensive apartments, in less remote neighbourhoods. Many of these people claim they gain an economic advantage. They no longer need to drive, because they are living closer to the amenities they need. For example, they can walk to stores. Because of this exercise, they no longer need a membership in a health club, so they save money there, as well.
A well thought out production with sound advise.
Encouraging information for those with a discouraging retirement outlook.
I love the concept of Geo-Arbitrage, in which one takes their "first world" pension and spends it in a developing world location, to realize an outsized spending power. Madeira of course, is not in the "developing" category, but as your other videos have shown, the dollar goes quite a bit further than it does in the States. Not to the same extent as Turkey, Georgia, Thailand or rural Paraguay, but Madeira offers some First World bennies the others do not. We are trying to squeeze Madeira into our "Super Fecta" lifestyle. Keep on creating! 👌
Nice video once again. As I mentioned, I really like the talk-as-you-show-the-island approach. Best of both worlds. Your calculations are a little uncanny – almost as though we're working off the same financial plan. We retired 5 years ago and so far we're tracking nicely along our projections, so I can vouch for your numbers. Good job.
Thank you for sharing and encouragement that we can plan and retire early.
Beautiful hike. I love the lavadas. Have you hiked a trail without one that is not in a city since you moved to Madeira? I agree 100% about downsizing, less house to clean, lower utility bills and lower tax bills for sure. Thanks for the beautiful scenery on your hike.
