Hunting for Mushrooms (and the Pub) Near My Homestead in Central Portugal

Hi everyone! I’ve got two videos for you this weekend… yay! The second is out tomorrow at 5pm, so stay tuned for that!

In today’s video I take you for a wee wander around my area, walking out from my tiny house doorstep to explore the surrounding paths. Central Portugal is beautiful and my neighbourhood is peppered with stone ruins, little farms, and lots of paths snaking their way through the stunning landscape.

We’ll explore while also keeping an eye out for mushrooms and I aim to find a shortcut to the pub. It’s a bit of a different video this week, but I hope you enjoy it and I’ll be back to building and gardening work in no time.

As always, thanks for watching and I’ll see you tomorrow for Part 2!

  1. Once you start learning about mycology you'll probably find it so addicting. You'll have mason jars of dehydrated mushrooms in no time. Mushrooms are such a wonderful meat substitute. Oyster mushrooms are wonderful as meat substitute & reconstitute great. Winter oyster mushrooms should be popping now. They are darker than spring oysters 😋 🍄

  2. What a sweet walk! I imagine enjoying a beer and the sunset with you 😊 but maybe a second hammock? Sinead’s land looks very nice and it’s exciting to see your community growing.

  3. Just lovely! Yes- the mushroom foraging is quite a skill and a lot to learn (especially about “doubles” the poisonous version of each type) it’s good you have someone knowledgeable that can help you distinguish!

  4. Another great video Kirsty, your walk on country lanes shows what beautiful area you live in, and how peaceful it is. BTW we got the place we had been looking at when we met you, so hopefully we will see you when we're there in the new year.

  5. I had a house in central California (town of Inyokern) & decided to let the trees drop their leaves n not rake them. The land was sandy loam, & I figured the leaves might turn it into fertile soil eventually. (Lie, I was just too lazy to rake). About 12 years later there was a hefty layer of leaves. One fall, there appeared to be breaches on the ground in the layer of leaves. Something was breaking through the tops here and there. They were mushrooms, looked like Portabellas. I was in shock and delightment! After much contemplation, I nibbled just a sliver. Next day a bigger sliver. I told my roommate about them around this time, and he got really mad at me and said I was going to die. I harvested 90% of them and ate them, they were SO good, and I did not die. I am not encouraging anyone to nibble on unfamiliar mushrooms. It was a gamble and I got lucky, real lucky, best mushrooms I've ever eaten!!

  6. I loved the video, compared to Canada, it’s hard to imagine dirt roads, that are either public or private that look the same with no road signs, how do people find people? How do addresses work? I know they are not undeveloped but it feels third world.

  7. Yah I experienced this dog chasing in Portugal, we were tourists and were walking near our hotel. And my husband and I did find it hard to tell what was a public road and what led to a persons property. We had a German Shepard escort us out of a lane. My husband was traumatized.

  8. What an adventure and the beginning of many more walks, especially when your friend arrives. I can see you two walking down to the township to visit the drinking holes and staggering home full of fun. Maybe in your next walk you could use some coloured ribbons to mark your path. Good luck.

  9. Mushroom hunting sounds like fun! I would love to safely forage if I knew more, maybe I could. I love eating mushrooms, Shitaki, Portabella, Oyster. I will be attempting to grow my own. I bought a pink Oyster mushroom kit and here in South Florida USA, during the "cooler" months, I think it might be ok. We will see. I am also going to try cultivating store bought as well! A new neighbor told me how he did it. Worth a try, I think. Have a great time learning more from your expert. I wish I could go with you!

  10. It's a very beautiful and tranquil area that you live in! It was a nice Adventure thank you for bringing us along! Can't wait to see the mushroom Festival that sounds like fun! That was a beautiful kitty that you encountered😊
    🌻🐾🥰

  11. I think you walked straight past a mushroom on your way , just before you found the second lot. Could they be what we call Robellones in Spain, or Lactarius deliciosus, they are a similar color and grow in similar conditions here. We should all walk more, but editing all the vids gets you stuck behind a computer 😣 looking forward to the mushroom ident. Best wishes from near Valencia 😊

  12. Nice walk, if it was me I'd still be bumbling around the countryside completely lost. Hubby says I'd get lost in a barrel & he's absolutely right, no sense of direction at all. 😸
Mushrooms can be extremely poisonous, apparently there are some seriously scary ones in Portugal so be careful handling them until you're sure they're safe.
