  1. Dogs live in the moment, that's why they can have separation anxiety. They don't remember that you came home last time you left, all they know is that you are gone now and they panic. So they don't think about what they just dreamt, they just know they are awake now and have people. Obviously they can be trained and therefore have memory but as far as reminiscing about the past, it's not a thing.

  2. I think dogs know it's a dream. I've watched my dog run in her sleep like she's chasing a squirrel and then wake up but doesn't continue to find or chase whatever she was dreaming about. I mean they definitely know the difference from sleeping and being awake.

  3. I think dogs remember them for a short when le. Because my uncles dog woke up from a bad dream and was side eyeing him and growling for 10 min. My uncle had to turn the lights on and convince his dog that he was awake and safe.

  4. All living things are sentient beings. They have souls (regardless of what you've heard in the past.) For them not to be, they would have to be zombies. Wait, 🤔 Nope, not going to speak it into existence. I feel like dogs (and animals alike) have to remember their dreams, but maybe not the way that we do? Like, we can wake up and realize that we were dreaming. I feel like dogs (and animals alike) know that they have a memory of something that happened, but whether they realize that that memory isn't real is a really good question. 🤔

  5. Hi Rach, I love all your videos and the editing is amazing but would it be possible to tone down the flashing lights or have a warning. I have epilepsy and every so often a video of yours can trigger a seizure. Which sucks cause I love your videos 😂 and I don't want you to have to worry about just one person but it would be helpful for me to see a warning before a flashing scene. Sorry to be a bother 🙈🙈🙈

  6. Did you ever see a dog go ape shit crazy when their human comes home after being deployed overseas for 6 months? Obviously, their memory is long, but I'm not sure if they even have the ability to understand remembrance of a dream. That would mean that they would have the ability to question or seek understanding of a dream. But then again, maybe they're actually much smarter than we think.

  7. PLEASE visit Porto. You must see Livraria Lello. I promise, you won't be sorry. Plus, you'll LOVE Porto. You can take a picture as if you're going through the wall at the Harry Potter train station. BUT, as long as you're in Lisbon, look for Petite Bistro. DELICIOUS food.

  8. My dog was badly abused before he came to us. He has nightmares that make him shake and cry. It takes him a few minutes after waking up to realize it was a dream and he is safe and loved. Dogs are absolutely sentient.

  9. I loved this video, and I am so excited to see more in Portugal. 😍
To be honest, I don't think dogs even remember their dreams when they wake up. Also, I can't believe you even thought of that, and we are commenting about it. 🐕
    I love you Rachel. 💝

  10. Maybe rather than sentient, the word Abbie was looking for is cognisant enough to differentiate between dreams and reality?

I think they are, but if their dreams are similar to ours in that they mimic reality maybe sometimes they have some dazed moments between sleep and awake that they forget which is what (just like we do?)
But we also don’t know what dogs dream about, maybe they’re always wildly different to reality, or in full colour, so they know as soon as they open their eyes what’s real and what’s dream….

  11. Generally speaking, animals who developmentally can recognize themselves in a mirror as themself is considered self-aware enough to realize and understand things like pretend, creativity, and possibly that dreams are separate from the real, living reality.

  12. My mind is racing with so many thoughts on this!! Dog and human brains are “structurally” similar, and the brain waves we produce when we are dreaming are similar to dogs, so it’s thought that they can remember dreams, but like humans….we don’t remember them all. Do they know they are dreaming when it’s happening…not likely. We don’t know we are dreaming until we wake up. Dogs tend to live in the moment, they don’t spend a lot of time thinking about what just happened, they are taking in what’s going on now, so I doubt they are trying to reflect on the dream they just had. The thoughts and questions just keep racing in my head. I’m a vet tech and will absolutely be asking my vets next week what their thoughts are on this subject!!!

  13. sentient being includes every conscious creature. There are several classes of sentient beings. Amongst these are a class for humans and one for animals. The class of animals includes all species whether mammal, bird, fish, or insect. The classes are ranked, however, with people ranking above animals. Plants are the only living thing excluded from consideration as a sentient being

  14. Dog Dream Question: I think they can differentiate, or at least some dogs can. Whenever my dogs are clearly having a dream (their legs are moving and/or they are barking in their dream) they wake up suddenly and look around as if recalling they are in a different place, then lay back down calmly like "oh, I am safe now. no giant cats chasing me anymore." I honestly don't know, but these are my thoughts on it. Hope that helps Rachel! 🙂

  15. As a person who cant eat dairy, when i do (because Im mean to myself) I always have weird dreams. Doing a quick google search says "dairy products were the foods most frequently reported as causing disturbing dreams."

  16. I definitely think my dog can differentiate. He dreams SO INTENSELY. He’s also just a really dramatic and happy dog with the biggest personality and imagination . He barks/cries/runs/etc every night in his sleep. and I watch him because he will really work himself up in a dream and when he has bad dreams for hours after he wakes up he is very clearly relieved but also I can tell he remembers the dream because he seems more anxious but also I can tell he knows he’s safe when he wakes up which makes me feel like he knows that his dreams aren’t real. Meaning he can differentiate and I know he remembers his dreams because he’ll be anxious after he has a bad dream and he thinks everything is out to get him 👍🏻 hope this helps!!

  17. It used to always make me so happy when my old dog would dream and be running in her sleep when she couldn't move much near the end 🥺❤️ I kinda hope she thought her dreams were real

  18. Animals are sentient! The whole meaning of the word sentient is "able to perceive and feel". Dogs have feelings, you can see the physical change in them when they feel something. I do think animals are aware they're dreaming also, perhaps not in the same level of thought we have, but I'm feel confident they're aware of the difference. Think of some of the nervous dogs/cats you know, if they weren't aware to some degree that they were dreaming, I feel like they'd be in a full out panic every time they woke up and were no longer in the dream environment.

  19. What I'd like to see in your Europe vlogs is …. An engagement 💍🥰🥰😂
Love you both and I'm really enjoying these vlogs 💖
Also , I think dogs do understand they're dreaming but it would be funny if their dreams are like an alternative reality and we are their "pets" in the dreams 🤣 xoxo

  20. I think a lot of animals aren’t smart enough to differentiate between dreams and reality, but I do think that dogs are actually smart enough and aware enough of reality to tell the difference, but I don’t think that they remember their dreams. I hardly ever remember my dreams myself, so who knows?!?!

  21. Fish are sentient beings! A sentient being is a living thing that can feel pain and is aware of their body/ experience. Dogs would be super confused if they remembered their dreams lol. My dogs seem to be in a high speed chase every time they dream.

  22. I think doggo’s can remember their dreams, my good boi was once attacked by another doggo. When it happened he made these bizarre squeaky yips. He had never made that noise before the incident. Sometimes he has dreams (vet says it could be PTSD) where he barks and then starts making the squeaky yips then does the running thing all while he’s sleeping, then all of a sudden he’s awake and he runs as fast as he can still yipping. It’s like he running for his life. We calm him down with cuddles and loves, but he stays on high alert checking the front yard for about an hour. Both the doggo’s were physically fine afterwards, just a few scratches. We don’t blame the other dog, she is a good girl who lives down the street. Her owners weren’t home and someone was setting off illegal fireworks in front of her house and she bolted, I was in my front yard with my good boi trying to see who was playing with the fireworks, she ran towards my house my good boi barked at her as she was running which frightened her more, and they had a little fight.

  23. My dog has been through some trauma and has had nightmares. His hackles will go up and he’ll start growling but I will gently wake him with a quiet whisper “ it’s ok, pax….it’s ok” and he wakes up and calms back down. So..I believe they can differentiate the two. They are dreaming things they remember so of course they wake and remember it as well.

  24. You should watch the “What About Bunny” channel. Bunny has been trained to talk using speech buttons. Her mom works for the company that invented them, so bunny has been using them longer than most dogs and is very articulate. She calls dreams “night talk” and tells her mom about them sometimes. There's a recent video where she tells her mom she dreamed about playing with her dad. They definitely understand the difference. Ooo, fun video series idea. You guys teach little dog to talk using buttons.
