In The Mood for Beira: Part 2 | Manteigas, Almeida, Castelo Rodrigo | Travel Portugal

The Beira region in central Portugal has so much to offer, from glorious mountainous escapes to historical fortress towns, from idyllic villages to sprawling vineyards. This region occupies a significant Portuguese frontier, facing the border with Spain, so you’ll find a string of defensive castle towns that have protected the nation ever since the founding of Portugal.

We continued our odyssey across this region, exploring the bucolic mountainous escape, starting in the beautiful town of Manteigas, where we were welcomed by Ecolã into their textile factory, where wool has been sheared, spun and woven since 1925. We were also welcomed in their latest project, Hotel da Fábrica, turning an ancestral factory into a mountain refuge.

Soon, we spirited ourselves away into the land of castles and “aldeias historicas” or historic villages, exploring Sabugal, Celorico da Beira, Almeida, Figueira Castelo Rodrigo and Castelo Branco. And finally, indulged in the incredible wines in this region, guided by expert sommelier Salvador Borges de Castro, with a little help from the Adega Cooperative de Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo.

That’s our Beira trip complete – a satisfying odyssey into this region that awaken the senses. Thank you for being part of this journey!

  1. Your “In the mood for Life” series has inspired me. Your beautiful films were a huge factor in my wife and I visiting Portugal for 3 weeks in October. What a beautiful country. Another lovely film that will have me dreaming to come back.

  2. We've missed you. I've missed you and your videos! By far the best audiovisual presentations of my home country by anyone! Your work is incredible and it is equally incredible the fact you're not more well known. Keep up the amazing work, though. You make us all dream. And that is the sign of a true artist.

  3. Once again you out did yourself , Great al around on everything on the video, 1 more great production . Its obvious you were meant to do this type of work well if you want to call it work that is eheheh its never work when we are doing what we want & love to do… I know Portugal does enough on its own to promote it self with its beautiful picturesque towns & castles – forts , vibrant Cities, rich history & its people, beaches, culinary & wines and so on, but its great to see how you package all that into one short video and take it to the next level, .. Please continue & Thanks – Obrigado amigo 🙂

  4. I was looking forward to your work and it's worth the wait. You are the one who best presents the beauty of Portugal from the eyes of a foreign. Thank you Janz, I love you vision, your videos.
