Who was John of Gaunt?

John of Gaunt was the third of the five sons of King Edward III of England, one of the richest and influential men during the reigns of Edward III, his father, and Richard II, his nephew.

He was one of the most hated men by merchants and nobility in English History. The peasant revolt of 1481 attacked his palace and overturned his coat of arms as an accusation against him.

His descendants became the Kings and Queens of England, Spain, and Portugal and famously married and fought each other in the “Wars of Roses” and the “Great Armada.”

He was the forefather of the House of Lancaster as his son. Henry Bollinger deposed his nephew, Richard II, after returning from exile. Henry’s son and Gaunt’s grandson is Henry V, who won the decisive Battle of Agincourt His great-grandson. The House of Lancaster became extinct when Henry VI’s seventeen-year-old son, Edward of Westminster, was executed at the Battle of Tewkesbury. The Yorkists had also murdered Henry VI in the Tower of London.

He also spawned the House of York, as Edward IV and Richard III were his great-grandsons.
Edward IV died quite suddenly in 1483, leaving his 13-years-old son to become Edward V. Richard III overthrew the young Edward V after only 78 days on the throne. No one saw the young princes in the tower ever again.

Henry Tudor ended the Wars of the Roses by defeating and killing Richard III a the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. He was also a descendant of John of Gaunt. Henry VII was Gaunt’s great-great-grandson.
Henry VII married Edward IV’s daughter Elizabeth of York and created the House of Tudor. The Tudors ruled England until the death of Elizabeth I in 1603.
All subsequent British monarchs were descendants of this marriage between Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, and of John.

Catherine of Lancaster, Gaunt’s daughter from his second marriage, became the Queen of Castille and great-grandmother of Catherine of Aragon. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella had named Catherine of Aragon after Gaunt’s daughter.

Phillipa of Lancaster, his daughter, married King John I of Portugal and gave birth to Portuguese princes including Prince Henry the Navigator, who upgraded European ships and began the European Age of Discovery.

Five of Henry VIII’s sixth wives were closely related to John of Gaunt.

Catherine of Aragon, Henry’s first wife, was the great-granddaughter of Catherine of Lancaster.
Both Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr, Henry’s fifth and sixth wives, were descendants of Joan Beaufort.
Although not descended directly from John of Gaunt, Jane Seymour was a descendant of John’s brother, Lionel of Antwerp. Anne Boleyn was a descendant of Elizabeth Plantagenet, Gaunt’s sister.
