Keeping Portuguese Talent in Portugal – Moving to/from Portugal Thursday – The GMP!

#movingtoportugal #livinginportugal #expatsinportugal

On ´Moving to Portugal´ Thursday we talk to regular resident, our man in The North, Vitor Costa, about Portuguese people moving FROM Portugal. Why, when we love this country so much, do the young and talented of Portugal leave at the soonest opportunity? Is it purely a matter of economics or is there more to it? And how might entrepreneurs and start-ups be persuaded to stay?

  1. Great stuff today Marl & Vitor! Really appreciate your discussion and perspective on Portugal. It's these insights into Portuguese culture that I find so interesting and helpful as my wife and I prepare for future life in Portugal.

  2. Hi Carl, congrats for the channel, and Vitor also for for your interesting participation.
I am a 44 year old Portuguese and having some international experience (including at the moment), I wanted to share a different perspective regarding why do Portuguese leave the country, being such a great country to live in. In my opinion it is not a question of mindset at all, it comes more to facts. It is just a fact that other countries that have a more efficient economy, pay much better for your work, as well you have also much better working conditions, specially in north of Europe or the United States. That is why Portugal aside with Romania, and some other few countries are basically cheap outsourcing paradises from known international companies. On other hand, remote work is sometimes possible, even if you do not earn the value you would earn in the contacting country, you end up earning a little bit more while you get to work on your own country. Not all work is possible remotely so people emigrate, as they consider here they cannot have enough time for their families or even for them, and their work effort is not proportional to the retribution they're getting. There are many differences in working aboard for Portuguese people, because the wages here are very low in comparison with abroad, sometimes you earn in two/three months the proportional to one year work, so in my opinion, opinion which I know that many people around me share, we believe that it does not come down really to mindset, and it is related with something more pragmatic as substantial like financial benefits. And lets be honest, the standard Portuguese, or has two jobs, or works many hours, and for that doesn't have the financial freedom to be an entrepreneur, even if they wanted, most of the times is not accessible or compatible with their reality. What in economy generally we call the "cost of opportunity" is very expensive here in Portugal. This is not specific to Portugal but also for other countries, but from my perspective, surely is not a mindset. With all respect for Vitor opinion, I think it is a bit simplistic and a bit of a fallacy to compare this reality to Nigeria, we are comparing a country that is Geo-political, social, economic, human-right abiding, etc., completely different from Portugal, we of course could want to compare Portugal with other countries with harsh situations, so then why would we want to stop in Nigeria and why not talk about also Angola, Afghanistan, Palestine, etc … I think it would not be much related in terms of understanding our reasons. So these are all very different realities, so in my view that it is not really a comparison that has any value for understanding the base question, why people leave the country in hope to achieve something that permit them to have simple things, like having their own house and enough money to have a somehow relaxed living, things they seem not to be able to have if they get stick to the country opportunities. Of course all realities are different, so the opinions, but I believe this opinion I am sharing it is a massively shared also between many of the Portuguese I known, and I think would enrich your channel that I would share this with you all. Good luck for your wonderful channel that I like to follow when its possible and I have the time 🙂 Hugs to both.
