Kommunalka, a Soviet type of housing that still exists

Kommunalka, shared apartment, an epoch in the Soviet life. A not very comfortable housing which provided a place to live for millions of Soviet families. If you think this epoch was gone together with the Soviet Union, you are mistaken. Kommunalkas are more then alive. People buy them with mortgage.

  1. Could you talk about what it is like to live in a country that uses lies and propaganda to justify the murder and rape of people of in neighboring countries?

  2. Honestly, this was a an eye opener! The squalor and disgusting condition of the entire living quarters was shocking, to say the least. I am confused as to why you took out a mortgage for this place but then never lived there, how could you afford the monthly expenses and is this really considered an investment??

  3. Looks more like student accommodation…hope the bathroom gets renovated this summer too….!!!! I'm wondering does Russia have a housing Minister…(in charge of housing)..Very interesting…

  4. I can't imagine living that close to others, nevermind raising children like that, with strangers, no privacy, no space, in one room, sharing bathroom, kitchen and living space. That interest rate is ridiculous, especially for a mortgage. That's an insane rate.

  5. OK, here are some fun questions for Ksenia (or whomever).

What is your idiom for heating food items in a microwave oven? In Southern California, we either say that we "Nuke" the food, or we "Zap" the food in the microwave.

Is there such an idiom in Russia?

  6. Wow that is expensive, I thought. I pray you will be able to sell and get lots of money for your new apartment. I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. I would like when you say certain simple words like street or table in English you would also tell us how to say it in Russian. I would like to enroll in your classes if you would also tell us a little of how to say in Russian.

  7. I thought that was very expensive for that space.
The interest rate was very high also.
You were probably able to establish credit that way, so that's good.
Now look. It was a great investment for you to have to use now during hard times.

  8. Very interesting and so informative. I have never heard of these shared apartments. I don’t think we have anything like it here in the 🇺🇸. Thank you for teaching us about the history of them and showing us yours.

  9. Could a couple live in one? What would happen if they had a baby? Would they have to move out with kids? I think that was really expensive to pay for one room but I guess it was an investment. Won’t you lose though if the ruble is worth less now than it was when you bought it and paid the payments? Good luck finding a buyer. 🤞

  10. In the USA, 14.25% would be a very high interest rate on a mortgage. This is because, until you pay it off, the lender owns the property. if you are not able to make the payments, they can sell it to someone else. This is different from a higher risk loan, such as for credit cards, for example, where if you default, the lender is stuck for the full remaining amount. Are such high rates typical in Russian cities?

  11. Many many expats in Brussels are living in that way, with the same ratio salary/rent. Amazing how Moscow and Brussels are similar. Yes, the life for youngs is similar in Moscow and Brussels.

  12. I could definitely live there…but would like to talk to all the neighbors first. That probably is not practical or even possible but not knowing who you're going to be living so close with could turn into a horrible nightmare. I recently acquired a roommate for my 2 bedroom apartment, I used a service that specializes in matching up roommates so that each of you has a better chance to live a peaceful, successful life together. If the kommunalka residents used a service like the one…it could make life a lot easier for everyone I think. Hey…that might be a lucrative business for you to start for yourself! You would be great at it….you have the perfect and approachable personality for such an enterprise.

  13. Good luck with the sale and your future investment. Very informational video, funny but not so funny thing to share during the YouTube advertisement they played a McDonalds commercial (really?) the YouTube algorithm has a dark sense of humor.

  14. First thing I have to say is wow. I don’t think that sounds cheap at all! Besides all that, your interest is near theft. How do people workout bathing, and cooking times? I can only imagine the frustration of someone taking a long bath and using all the hot water, and what can you do about it other than give them the evil eye.
