The castle is seen from Lisbon’s most picturesque hilltop vantage point, which sits on the opposite slope. A manicured patio with two floors is home to two kiosk cafés that serve drinks and light fare, as well as busts of historical and mythical people.
A fountain sits in the middle of the upper level, which is covered in typical Portuguese cobblestone patterns. The monuments that can be seen from here are shown on a tile panel that was installed in 1952. There is also a monument from 1904 honoring the newspaper vendors of Bairro Alto, which at the time served as Portugal’s press hub.
A fountain that draws water from a reservoir of the enormous city aqueduct is disguised on the wall of the lower level geometric garden.
One of Lisbon’s few features that tourist books continue to ignore is the monastery that faces it (Convento de So Pedro de Alcântara). It is a 1670 structure that was first made accessible to the public in 2014. Inside, you’ll find a magnificent marble chapel, a baroque church with a gilded altarpiece, and tile panels depicting St. Peter of Alcantara’s life, for whom the viewpoint was also called.
