In the Municipio square, there are three prominent places that deserve a longer visit: the Building of Paços do Municipality, Pelourinho de Lisboa, and the square itself, from the kiosk with terrace.

The current headquarters of the Lisbon City Council stands out for being a neoclassical palace sent after the 1863 fire, intervention by architects such as Domingos Parente da Silva and Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro.

In his façade, you will be able to see a carved pediment, by Calmels, which presents in the center the coat of arms of the city flanked by the figures of love and freedom, plus the geniuses of science, navigation, industry, and commerce considered attributes of the capital.

Inside, the highlight goes to its high-quality decoration, with enhancement to the noble marble staircase illuminated by a dome of iron and glass, covered inside by a painting by Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro and José Malhoa.

Even before the pandemic, it was a building that could visit on the first Sunday of each month at 11 am, for free. It is currently requested to enter contact to schedule a visit.
