Living In A Tiny NYC Apartment For $1,100/Month | Unlocked

Alex Verhaeg, 23, lives in a tiny 95-square-foot apartment located in NYC’s East Village. He pays $1,100/month in rent. Alex believes he has a pretty good deal because he doesn’t have to live with roommates. However, there are some drawbacks: Since the space is so small, he has to sleep diagonally.

Unlocked is a new home tour series focused on how much people across the U.S. spend on their housing, what they get for the money and what they had to sacrifice to make it happen.

  1. NYC is one of the very few places in the US with a walkable environment where you dont need a car. The prices are ridiculous for a few reasons, but keep in mind that this guy doesn't need to pay for a car which most people in the states would need.

  2. Let's stop this immediatly! Words have meaning and this one – apartament – should not be changed. Apartament has a kitchen and a bathroom! Full Stop!

As George Carlin once said corporations start changing words and their meaning to make us swallow certain things easier. You can call home to this room. It is a wonderful room, well decorated but it's a ROOM not an apartment.

  3. Soooo he still have roommates lol sharing a bathroom with all them people daily would annoy me….it’s weird how people who pays a lot for rent have phrases to justify living in these small tiny places….

  4. If you're happy, that's all that matters. Looks equivalent to living/sleeping in a 6'x16' long camper. Bet there is always some form of entertainment the instant you walk outdoors.

  5. Just worried about him saying he cuts hair in his apartment. NYC will figure out how to get money from him. I lived in a room about the same size, no windows but I had a bathroom. My subway ride was an hour to get to lower Manhattan.$750/month

  6. Good for him and glad he seems happy but that price is not ok for that small space. It's like a dorm room with all the shared space. And mice?? Maybe it's a New York thing but it doesn't seem worth it to me. Too small, no amenities, lack of personal bathroom .

  7. Good comprehensive video. The no bathroom would be a deal breaker for me even if it was free, but I guess at your age and being a creative it's fine. Just hope you're saving like crazy.
