Here at Zen Walks, we love Christmas! 🎄 After recording our Lisbon Christmas videos (linked below), we travelled to Porto, the Portuguese northern capital, and walked in the city centre at night, to fully enjoy this season’s shimmering Christmas lights.
We start this night walking tour at the Street of Santa Catarina, Porto’s vibrant commercial alley, in front of the Chapel of the Souls (Capela das Almas), beautifully covered in traditional Portuguese blue tiles — a truly remarkable sight; there’s absolutely no doubt we are in Portugal 🙂
The route takes us down the Rua de Santa Catarina, where the iconic Majestic Café stands — a Belle Epoque-era cafe with ornate interior featuring carved wood, mirrors and chandeliers. We slow down our pace and get very close to it, so you can admire its luxurious interior.
Later on we turn towards Porto’s main avenue: Avenida dos Aliados. Along the way, we take a closer look at the Intercontinental Hotel, featuring an amazing façade, lit with thousands of yellow coloured lights — a starter for the feast of light that follows. All trees of Avenida dos Aliados are illuminated, and several buildings display imaginative Christmas lighting decorations, the highlight being the BBVA Bank building.
We then arrive at our destination: a 34 metres high Christmas tree, featuring 50.000 LED’s, animated with video technology.
As usual during this season, and despite pandemic fears, there’s plenty of people out and about, enjoying Porto’s Christmas lights and joyful ambience.

Viajámos até ao Porto, a capital do Norte de Portugal, e caminhámos pelo centro da cidade à noite, para tirar o máximo partido das iluminações de Natal recentemente instaladas.
Começamos este passeio virtual na Rua de Santa Catarina, em frente à Capela das Almas, completamente coberta por azulejos azuis tradicionais portugueses — um regalo para a vista, e que nos coloca, sem sombra de dúvidas, em Portugal.
Ao longo da Rua de Santa Catarina, aproximamo-nos do icónico Café Maejestic, um edifício de inspiração Belle Époque, com os seus interiores ricos em madeira esculpida, espelhos e candelabros. É aqui que abrandamos o nosso passo, para que possa admirar por breves momentos o interior do café.
Em seguida, viramos para a principal avenida do centro do Porto: Avenida dos Aliados. É aí que o Hotel Intercontinental exibe toda a sua fachada iluminada por milhares de luzes douradas, antecedendo a festa de luzes que se avizinha a seguir. Todas as árvores da Avenida dos Aliados estão iluminadas, e alguns edifícios exibem desenhos de luz impressionantes, como é o caso do Banco BBVA — e que filmamos com algum detalhe 🙂
Chegamos entretanto ao nosso destino: a árvore de natal de 34 metros, instalada em frente à Câmara Municipal do Porto e feita de 50 mil LED’s com tecnologia vídeo, mudando de cor e exibindo diferentes figuras e desenhos ao longo da noite.
Como é habitual nesta quadra, vêem-se imensas pessoas desfrutando das luzes de natal e do ambiente vivo da cidade do Porto.
