Leaving Lisbon behind, I boarded a jumbo jet with only NINE other passengers and headed to the archipelago of the Azores, located 1/3 of the way from Europe to North America, 1500 km off the coast of mainland Portugal.
These islands are a respite from the chaos and uncertainty that the world provides us with these days, with some of the lowest infection rates on the planet (only 100 managed cases at the time of travel, with zero community transmission). Why? The islands have one of the strictest entry regimes on the planet, with mandatory testing and hotel quarantine (which is FREE, and includes taxi transfer & all meals) until you receive your negative results (otherwise, it’s a 14-day stay inside the room).
I (surprisingly!) enjoyed my quarantine at the Angra Marina Hotel in Angro do Heroismo, which lasted about 26 hours in confinement, and a further 14 hours after confinement was lifted (as you are allowed to stay in the room until the next check-out time). I was incredibly impressed with the level of organization and efficiency with which I was greeted in the Azores, and was grateful that the Azorean government offers this program to truly provide a safe and secure place to explore during these chaotic times.
Do you have any questions about mandatory quarantine that I can help answer? Feel free to leave them in the comments below!
