————– Places visited on this tour:
Monsanto, perched on a hill, imposes itself on the horizon, being considered the most Portuguese village in Portugal. A Portugueseness that arises from the natural beauties, the peculiar architecture and, above all, the know how to receive from its people.
Monsanto attracts the senses with the grandeur and opulence of the granite blocks. The monstrous granite blocks scattered along the slopes are a tribute to Nature’s geometric self-organization. Seemingly unique, each of these blocks has been shaped by erosive agents over millions of years, creating patterns that excite our imagination.
This site is one of the most spectacular geomonuments of the UNESCO Meridional Naturtejo Meseta Geopark that represents 300 million Earth dynamics resulting from the action of tectonic forces that lifted crystallized granites from the depths of the Earth’s Crust.
The contours of the medieval village were defined at the dawn of Portuguese nationality by donation to the Knights Templar in 1165. It is in this period that the castle, of robust construction, was ordered to be built by D. Gualdim Paes de Marecos, Grand Master of the Templars.
The village, made up of stone houses darkened by time, develop in narrow streets twisted between rocks full of history.
