Moving Abroad As a Single Woman, Retire On Your Terms | Madeira Portugal | @It'll Be Fun

This new series introduces you to people who have done or are on their journey to retiring and moving to a new country. We are in Portugal on the Island of Madeira with Fiona. She is a single woman from Manchester England in the UK. She is a widower, her children are grown and has started off on a new adventure. We are so glad we met her and get to share her journey. we think you will find her story inspirational.

In this video we are in the Old Town of Funchal, so I little history lesson is in order for the day. In case you do not know, the Madeira Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean about 325 miles west of Morocco and 625 SW of Lisbon. Enjoy!

Have you ever thought about giving up on the American Dream. Well we finally decided to do just that. We chose to downsizing our life into one we could afford in retirement. And that has taken us to where we live now on the Island of Madeira in Portugal. Let’s go. It’ll Be fun!

  1. Hi all from Veronika in
New Mexico USA…Bom dia Fiona….obrigada for sharing. I was born in Bolton, Lancs…now planning Madeira move in next couple years…we r similar age…single. Looking 4wd to meeting you. Keep well…..have fun!

  2. Thank you for your channel, I just recently discovered you. I am ready to leave the US! Spain was my original choice but you and others have me seriously considering Portugal! I am going to plan a visit soon, I also have a dog I would need to bring. I do not want a car and would like to be able to walk or bike to cafes etc.

    Thanks

  3. No Milkyway on Madeira, o no! I think there is enough to treat your self with, on Madeira. The old town is our place to stay for the last 13 visits to Madeira. We love it too. And soon the add the 14th (sept). 😀👍🏻 p.s. we could get you some Milkyway if you really want some.😉

  4. Nice to meet you Fiona! And Alan , that’s a wonderful idea soliciting experiences from your friends, (but no Milky Way bars?🤔) those were great questions. You should give Leslie and Wolf some mic time!
Looking forward to your next episode. Wish I was in Funchal now! It’s 106* in Los Angeles today!!! Peace out!

  5. Manchester and Manconians, I know them to well, living in the UK and doing what I do for living, I'm bound to know this different places on the land of granny Becky, I like the way Fiona looks at life in my hometown, city of Funchal and of course the rest of the Island.

  6. We are in our early 40s and inspired every time we here your sign off “we should have done this sooner” This video, and the direction that you are taking to share stories of fellow expats is brilliant. Keep up the great work. We’re always excited for your new posts. Also our Bichon is fond of Greer 😀

  7. Loved this video! Wonderful to hear from a fellow Brit making it work. I wonder if she's a United or City fan?! 🙂 Interesting to hear about supermarket choices. Our diet is mainly fruit and veg, plus fish, so I suspect we will be just fine. I cook in a lot of different styles (from Vietnamese to Indian, from Thai to Mediterranean), so a detailed scout around for different available food items will be fun for me! (To learn if I may be able to make my different curry pastes). I do tend to jump right to the small details, and I had myself been wondering about bed/sheet sizes. We had a standard double bed in the UK, but have now grown accustomed to our California King bed here in the States. Being so detail-minded, I had already thought I would pop into certain types of shops to see what's the standard (or available) for all kinds of household and food items – including sheets, ha ha. Part of the scouting experience for me!
We applied for our NIFs on Friday – so, we're now in the 'process'! So looking forward to our discovery trip in just a few short weeks!

  8. How interesting I am from South Manchester !!! Lovely to hear Fiona's familiar accent…As i have said before we came to Portugal via the Netherlands so we were familiar with ex-pat life.and learning Dutch..Fiona is typical of a feisty Northerner…So nice to see her enjoying Funchal…

  9. We're impressed to see Fiona take on such an adventure–and manage the process one piece at a time on her own as well. Great interview! We're not big-city folk, but Funchal is drawing us!

  10. Nice job on the interview and your new series! I changed out most of my shoes when I moved to Lisboa…Sketchers are working for me! I don't miss much from back in the states except family, friends and good Mexican food! Luckily I can get most of the things I need to cook and create it, but in France it was a different story!!
