About 65,000 Muslims live in the southern European country of Portugal. The majority of Muslims in the country are Sunni. There are also a small number of Shia and Ismaili people here. Muslims came to Portugal from the colonies of the country in like Guinea and Mozambique. Many Muslims came from other smaller Portuguese colonies like Goa, Daman and Diu in India. During the last few years, many immigrants also came to Portugal from Syria, Morocco and Algeria. There are also many Pakistanis and Bangladeshis here. In 2015, Lisbon was chosen to be the global seat of the Nizari Shi’a community who are the second largest Shi’a denomination in the world. On July 11, 2018 the Aga Khan decided to move his global headquarters along with his official residence to Portugal. In 2015 Portugal and Aga Khan signed a landmark Agreement between the Republic of Portugal and the Ismaili Imamat for the establishment of a formal Seat of the Aga Khan in Portugal. The accord, which was approved by Portugal’s Parliament and the President of the Portuguese Republic, will result in intensified cooperation between Portugal and the Aga Khan Development Network in supporting research and the knowledge society as well as improving the quality of life of Portugal’s inhabitants. Aga Khan purchased the Henrique Mendonça Palace, a 12-million-euro estate, to take place as the new Global Headquarters and serve as an administrative structure to coordinate the Aga Khan Development Network. The Aga Khan group is followed by more than 15 million Muslims worldwide, of which 15,000 who live in Portugal.The Aga Khan Development Network has been present in Portugal since 1983 focusing on research and innovative direct intervention in the areas of early childhood education, social exclusion and urban poverty. The Central Mosque of Lisbon (Mesquita Central de Lisboa) is the main mosque of Lisbon, Portugal, serving the capital city’s Islamic community, the mosque is Europe’s third largest mosque outside of Turkey. The mosque has four minarets and two domes. The mosque contains reception halls, a prayer hall and an auditorium. The Central Mosque has formed a council to provide financial and others services to members of the local Muslim community.
