Have you heard of Carnaval? Do you know how different cities in Portugal celebrate this popular festival? Josh and Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere are in Podence, Portugal to show you why this sleepy town comes to life for this festival and why it is recognized by UNESCO. What do the colors symbolize? Why the bells? When do they burn the wicker man? Watch the Caretos de Podence dance around and enjoy the celebrations.
This carnival shares tradition, food, drinks, costumes, vibrant murals, and more. Do you want to do a tour like this or another tour around Portugal? Contact Ralfe at geral@ralfesiagh.com for more info. Visit his website at www.ralfesiagh.com

This is a great video! It’s nice to see historic and cultural events that are specific to PT and not necessarily well-known to others. We appreciate these kinds of videos. They only encourage us to move to PT asap and have some fun. Thank you.😊

thanks. But hard to concentrate on anything Portuguese because of the horrible Russian attack on Ukraine.
Yes, please continue periodically adding this type of content. As y’all grow in your journey, absorption into the language and culture is inevitable. Shed that US epidermis and let the Portuguese one shine through.
Happy Father’s Day, Josh! U rock!
Hello everyone… it’s a fun coincidence but I was there this year, on Saturday, and I loved it… the all village has an atmosphere that transport us to ancient times…the Caretos are very fun and off course, they shook us, specially my daughters 😅. Did you know that they are allowed to everything but enter the church? I’m from the Setubal region, but we are definitely going to come back. Btw, there are Caretos in more villages in Trás os Montes…check out Caretos de Lazarim… ah, and you must definitely try the posta…a big chunk of meat, a traditional dish from north of Portugal (posta mirandesa). We ate at the taverns and the bread and the wine we’re free … 😜
I liked this content. I enjoy learning about other cultures and their traditions. Thanks Josh, Kalie, and Cia.
Loved it! Great to see tradiçao kept alive!
Thank you for sharing. I had never heard of it.
Big fan of the Chocolate Gingha shot!! Very important to feel the moment! Yes! More like this! When is the pilgrimage to Santiago de Campostela??
Well done, like the content pieces!
Love this! Great narration Josh and Cia's smile at the beginning was, for me, a showstopper. Was Cia afraid of the costumes at any point? I would love to visit Podence during Carnaval but it doesn't seem too easily accessible without a car from Porto. It would be fun to do with a group. I know that every city in Portugal has its own Carnaval and I was hoping to see some video content like one this! Thank you.
Hi Josh/Kalie 👋
I'm originally from Brazil(Rio. Moved to NY when I was 10) and loved the little carnavals where I was born.
I had no idea that Portugal celebrated Carnaval, as well! 🤯 So thank you for making my decision to move there even more exciting 🙌.
And as always, AWESOME VIDEO! 🥳
Great to see this!
Great video Josh and Kaylie! Well done! 😊
Loved your video and being a part of the group.
Excellent video
That was a great event, thanks for capturing the memories!
Quite an interesting tradition I had never heard of it. Thanks for informing us. That meal that you guys were sharing at the table… wow, it looked so good.
OMG Josh!!!! Your Portuguese accent has become so authentic! I am so impressed! Parabéns, cara! And, the Rod Serling sounding narrative gave the vlog an other-wordly feeling. I don't eat beef or pork, I knew about alheira, knew I would eat that for sure, but had never seen it. Thanks for including that!
Great video! We live in Germany at the moment and are very familiar with the carnival atmosphere & it’s one of our favorite times of the year! Thanks for sharing, we are hoping to move to Portugal in the near future! Love your videos!
Why do Americans who leave the US call themselves expats but call ppl who enter the US immigrants? Genuinely curious.
I was waiting for this video. I remember you had some places free in the bus for us, but it´s far for me here in Coimbra. ¡Great video! I don´t have enough words. Thanks 😄
Fun!!! I look forward to experiencing some of the many Portuguese celebrations and I thnk it's great that you highlight them because they are a fun part of the expat experience!!
Very informative! Thanks for sharing! Would love many more
Kind of scary 😌
But was nice to watch it 🙂
Never liked carnival too much when I was a kid 😃
What a fun festival! The food looked amazing! I have to say my favorite part was Cia welcoming everyone on the excursion! ❤️🥰❤️
I like all of your content. It's good to have all the info on the "how to" expat, and the locations for living. But it's also great to get the flavor of the culture. Love it! Your daughter is slowly getting bigger to where she is starting to get in the act… so cute.
Loved it! 💖
Traditionally the "caretos" are only men, and that tradition was almost gone in the 70's..
Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
This was fun to watch. Thank you for sharing
3 Bronze Medal ooh yeahhh
We were in Tenerife during their carnival before covid, it was so awesome! Love this video, a great vibe!
Thats Celtic Portuguese culture
Another update… Received our approval from the Portuguese Consulate in London for stage 1 – D7 took just a month. We are incredibly happy! Back to Setubal very soon!
