My Gravel Bike Suffered a Mechanical DISASTER?! | Bikepacking Day 1 – 161km

My friend Joris and I went on a 5 day, 700km bike packing trip through The Netherlands. The main Route was the ”green divide” but we added a lot to that along the way. I just built a new gravel bike for this trip, the Winspace G2. We where prepared for a lot, but couldn’t see coming what happened on day 1….

🙏 Shoutout to ”Peerenboom fietsen” & ”Sector2 bikes and tandems” for saving our day!

  1. "spend peanuts you get monkeys" cheap chinese parts I'd say poor quality alloy nipples, you wouldn't use this stuff on the aircraft you fly in, going cheap has ruined your holiday ….. lesson learned!

  2. I have similar wheels, the nipple is indeed more fragile than the spoke, which depends on which angle you look, could be a good thing (those blade spokes are so strong) or a bad thing (whole system). The carbon rim is so stiff, it just won't bend, and the spokes are so stiff, so only the nipples. I don't have this bad luck, but with extensive use (5000+ km), with the corrosion from the tubeless sealant (I got a valve leak), degreaser, snow melter, one of my wheel's nipples started to fail. After a small accident, when try to true the wheel, i notice how fragile they become, and realized some of them were already failed. When you try to tighten them, some just break… I'd like to take this this way: the failed nipple just means that the rim and the spokes are good. AND by the way those tubeless nipples are a pain in the ass to fit.(you'll know when you try to do it yourself), better outsource that to a bike shop or the manufacturer. Have fun with your journey!

  3. I got a stick through my front wheel on an old 26er mtb on a night ride. It only broke one spoke so my wheel wasn't as damaged as yours. But my face was in much worse condition because that's what I landed on.

  4. Now the questions are coming I realize I never said what even happens to the wheel🤷🏼‍♂️😅 it didn’t JUST BREAK WITHOUT REASON🤪 next part I’ll give a little explanation

  5. There is something seriously wrong with your wheel set if that can happen. Too weak nipples or the spokes are too short (not enough threads trough the nipples)

  6. I would never use so few spokes during bike packing. What for? Tiny performance gains? A few hundred grams more and this would never happen.

  7. Jeez, that is a proper failure. Glad you got a replacement wheel finally sorted to hopefully finish your trip, not the best advert for Winspace G2 wheels!! I was considering buying them as a good price with the discount code, but going to go for my original plan of Scribe Gravel wheels I think. Shame as they looked good

  8. Have you checked out the Aero Tailfin rack? 20 l volume without the shaking of a saddlebag (but same aerodynamic benefits), no screw points needed, expandable to 64 l with two panniers on each side (with slightly worse aerodynamics) , but very expensive, around EUR 500 for just the rack
