  1. Sorry to hear about your bad experience. As you said, the issue you came across in Zhangjiajie is definitely not nation wide thingy. It is mostly at some regional and small cities where admin skill of the officials is just low. And they place their own regulations on top of what is passed down from the central government, which is largely not proper or necessary. I still remember your experience in Meizhou, which is very similar.
To avoid travelling to smaller places for now is not a bad idea, although it would be really depending on where you go.

  2. This is nothing compared to what oversea Chinese experience on a daily basis from being living at western countries (i.e. racial discrimination, etc). You should not feel bad at all but instead just talk to some Chinese and ask what kind of treatment they received as foreigners or immigrants from western countries. I must say it's ten times as bad at least, and a lot more frequent, and can be due to any reason not just Covid.

  3. What an absolutely awful experience, I don't know how you came through it all quite so unscathed. In all my years in Asia, I've never had quite such a terrible thing happen to me. And it's such a contrast to the perfect China that Daddy wants you to believe in, eh? Good thing you had the presence of mind to inform the officials that you are financed by CGTN, that probably saved you an evening of total misery, being cold and hungry. Still, not as bad as in the West, where you'd probably have been locked up for the night, maybe even shouted at by a cop. And at least it gave you a reason to make another inane video.

  6. Empathizing with you Ollie. Hopefully by sharing your experience, you are putting pressure to get more reform implemented to reduce or even eliminate such unethical behavior based on personal biases or prejudice. Communication and understanding can be ways to reform and improvement.

  7. Hi Oli, sorry to hear your experience, but don't let it get to you. Discrimination is a human condition, you'll encounter it wherever you go in the world. I'm an overseas Chinese living in Australia for many years, here I've had people telling me to "go back where you come from". Many times we got picked for random drug swab test at airports, somehow security profiler think we look like drug mules, and we notice the ones they picked are mostly non whites.
When I traveled to smaller towns, if I was the only Asian person around, people will stare at me. The same when I went to some European cities. I can hear people whispering "look…tourists…Japanese? Chinese?" I took a bus in NY once and a woman suddenly grabbed my shoulder just to ask what my ethnicity is, very alarming and unusual, because NY is full of Asian (maybe not in that particular bus?). When you look different from everyone else around you people gonna notice. The Covid situation made it worse. People in big cities & touristy areas have seen many foreigners so they hardly notice anymore, but if you want to explore off the beaten path, get mentally ready. Most of the time people are okay if you're friendly to them, with some exception, of course. Don't stop exploring, you are doing great work, I really enjoy your channel. Cheers!

  10. Hi oli, I am sorry to hear what happened to you and your friend, since I am also living abroad I can completely understand your feelings because so many times I got discriminated here in Europe especially unfortunately due to politics difference between China and these European countries and covid firstly detected in China. there was a long period of time some local European people walk away from me immediately because they believe me have covid even I have been living here for almost five years already, however, there's no any single media here in Europe really care about us suffering racism and discrimination I guess mainly due to politically correct, nobody could make our voice heard even some of us tried to contact media, they all refused to report it just simply replied sorry to hear that. As a Chinese national I just wanna thank you for speaking it out to let us understand we still have a lot of places aspects in terms of governance in especially local small places in China. And that's important for us because only we know problems so that we can improve. But again as a Chinese national myself I am sure things will be getting better. And my best wishes to your father a complete recovery and healthy.

  12. You are completing about China….be happy that you are in Australia you couldn't get in or out for two years even the state's were closed so stop complaining you are a hypocrit in EU we were constantly in lockdown…..

  17. That guy was covering his ass, he doesn't want to make decision on his own. And then when his reasons for refusing entry were proved false, he just doubled down on it. I hate those kinds of people especially when they are in public service.

  21. How did your display of Westerner’s superiority complex work out for you this time? Modern China will no longer take any abuses from foreign or domestic disobediences. Looked back at the American foreign administration got slapped on his face when he talked down to the Chinese diplomats at the world stage. China is no longer to behave submissively as before when being challenged. Listen and learn! Comply with the regulations when you are told by the Chinese authorities or you may face more embarrassment that you brought on to yourself!

  22. Speaking of discrimination, Chinese even gets bitten up or scolded with vulgarities in UK, it’s just a unhappy encounter only yet you make so much noise, describing yourself like you are ill treated, and all the freedom and convenience that you have enjoyed for past 2years are all because of those strict isolation measure, please comply with the rules or leave!

  23. What's more, depends when this was. If it was within the recent past then surely the point is you guys had been in Wuhan which had four 'medium risk areas'. Where did you get the 星号
Xīng hào? Don't the regulations mean if you have one, you have to quarantine for 14 days? So weren't the officials technically right?

  24. As a Chinese Australian, I have experienced similar discrimination within China. A lot of time, it may seem like discrimination toward you because of who you are, but the truth is they are just taking matter into their own hand and covering their own of ass. In your video the guy whos not letting you into the city was not following covid regulation protocol, he put his personal need before the government regulation, this happened to me before too. The reason I think he picked you and your friend is because foreigner stand out and let just say if there is a covid outbreak in his city, he is going to be the one to be losing the job. From my experiences, if the people are giving your trouble and willing to change their mind later on after some talk, then he is not discriminating you, but rather he is not doing his job properly, and this has happened to me multiple times. In large cities like Beijing, Shanghai, or ShenZhen people follows protocol a lots, however what I have noticed is that in smaller cities or places further out, people often less likely to follow government regulation and often create all sorts of problems, and often backfire on their ass. It can be frustrating at times when thing like this happens, but remember might is right, I know its wrong to think it this way, but lot of times it works.

  25. Sorry to hear this. At least that person lied about his discrimination, not discriminate you openly to your face. What I have experience in the US, is open discrimination at my work. I am a Chinese teacher, I have been told that only French and Spanish class are running in two sections, and I have enough students to sign up for two sections of class. Imagine that the person told you they only allow Chinese, French and Spanish in, not allow the American and the British in.

  27. First of all, as a Chinese, when I travel in other cities in China, I usually first understand the control methods of the destination city, and even call the local control department in advance, because the control strength of each city is different,
Secondly, I remember in Zhangjiajie that local officials were held accountable because of poor management and control, so some of them liked the one size fits all management. I'm sorry this kind of lazy politics has brought you a lot of inconvenience
