Named after its minimalist, lego enthusiast owner, Alex was meticulously designed by William Chan of Spacedge Designs to suit the very particular style and needs of his client. Given complete creative freedom, Chan removed all the internal walls of the 47sm public housing flat, creating one continuous open space with a series of seamless wood-look laminate cabinets, chosen for their easy maintenance and pattern consistency, that appear to float off the ground. Hidden inside this cabinetry are carefully curated functional zones including a desk to work and build lego at, as well as a compact kitchen, laundry and concealed fridge. Blue tubular hardware and a matching light fixture that runs the length of the living room, along with a wall mounted, fluorescent orange “coin bank” designed by Chan and included on recommendation from a feng shui master, are the only pops of colour in the otherwise clean and crisp space.

  1. This is a difficult home to love. It’s impossible to have people over (unless they want to sit on wooden boxes or the concrete floor); but more than that, the layout loses much space to hallways and an odd layout results, like a tiny bed and a dysfunctional kitchen. Even if all you do is cook oatmeal, that kitchen’s layout is clumsy beyond compare. But hey there room for a Lego gallery. For the guests you can never have over except to stand the whole time.

  2. This is such a unique space, but very cool. I always wonder whether people who like these really minimalist places have a lot of stress in their lives and need the space empty as a respite from that…

  3. Wow.. I think I can live in this place. But I'll probably make the cabinets more colorful and probably have a little fancy sofa set and probably hang fancy paintings too~ I like that everything is inside a cabinet; I won't have to worry about having to clean stuff because dust accumulation would be very minimal. :3

  4. This is my favourite space I have seen on the channel to date. The cars and client-centric design is incredible. This is 100% exactly what the client wanted and it’s amazing to see such a unique space.

  5. Be careful about overly glamorising these Soviet-style high rise apartments for the common man!

This is a project done with the sole purpose of keeping people boxed up in tiny spaces, living on top of each other, while the rich ruling class get to own sprawls of land and countryside!

How can one raise a family or have pets or grow their own food in such a space?

Be careful! Don’t fall for this socio-economic trap!
