New Digital Nomad Visa for Italy is Finally Coming! – Part 1

MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT! The Italian government has announced a new Visa that will be made available to self-employed Digital Nomads and employed remote workers who would like to call Italy home. This new visa is a major update for individuals who would like to move to Italy and be allowed to stay in Italy long term. Up until now, this has been very challenging for many people who are not eligible for Italian Citizenship by descent or from the EU. This new visa is for those who are from outside the European Union who would like to live in Italy. The entrepreneurial visa that Italy has had for some time now has been quite limited and the approval process was quite complex, but this new visa promises to offer an expedited process to a larger group of people. In this episode of the Italian Citizenship Podcast, hosts Marco Permunian, an Italian attorney, along with video podcaster and dual-citizen expat, Rafael Di Furia ( @Rafael Di Furia – Not Your Average Globetrotter) go over the new Italian Digital Nomad Visa.

  1. Thank you for this info. Really helps.

Could you also clarify if the time spent in Italy under a digital nomad visa (along with any subsequent renewals) would count towards getting Permanent Residence in Italy in 5 years, and eventually towards Italian citizenship?

I'm British and I'd be keen to naturalize as an Italian citizen.

  2. Mmm – so if I work remotely for a UK company and also receive money from UK pensions, what would my tax rate be in Italy? Does it also vary from region to region? (I worked in Italy before on a mobile network licence application and I know they were keen to attract employment/investment in the south)

  3. Hello, has anyone worked with this company in the past? Or does anyone reading this work for the company? I'm interested in getting italian citizenship and I think I have the right decent to prove it. However, how do I know a company that is going to receive lots of private information such as birth certificates is not going to try to steal my identity?

  4. I have Questions about Decree's and Italian Citizenship and other things that could be of Interest to Many Italian Americans or from other countries that might be in the same situation.
    1. A Decree is Formed How and by Who?
    2. How can a subject be addressed to Form a Decree?
    3. How long does it take to get a subject matter heard by the people responsable to form a Decree to be actually Formed?
    4. In the Italian Courts System, DNA Can be used. But what restrictions are there for that?
    5. If DNA Can be used in the Italian Court System then How can a Decree be Formed to be able to use DNA to Help with Italian Citizenship for someone who unfortunatly don't have the Italian Parent's Name on their Birth Certificate, but is on their Siblings or Half Siblings Birth Certificates?
There are a Lot of people who for one reason or another that don't have One of their Parent's Names on their Birth Certificates which would be in almost if not all cases, the Father's Name is the one missing. For this reason through the way that Italian Citizenship is Required to show a Clear Unbroken Line of Decent, this breaks it.
So, If DNA Can be used to Prove a Match to the Italian Parent by matching with the other Sibling/Siblings then More People could have a Path to Italian Citizenship.

  5. I'm gathering my family documents (missing one) to make the IT citizenship – I'm also a DN, do you think I can start my citizenship papers even after living one year as a digital nomad once this law is applied?

  6. Hubby and I will be selling our business to semi retire. We will be setting up a % of sales moving forward as a "pension" payment to us in Italy from Canada. Essentially a pay cheque from the business we are selling. I wonder if this would fall under Digital Nomad category? We would be self employed by the company that we have sold essentially. Any info would be appreciated. *Edit- I am second generation Italian and we plan on buying a property.

  7. This is pretty cool, Thanks. Love the show! Quick question, My direct Paternal grandparents are from Italian decent however I am a 1948 case. If I move to Italy using a visa, am I eligible for naturalization after 3 years? If yes, after I naturalize, would my son be eligible to naturalize as well?
