In this video, Immigration Attorney Parviz Malakouti discusses the new trend in Central Europe towards liberalization of citizenship by descent programs, including one new program which may be passed this year (2022).
Europe, especially countries of the former Austro-Hungarian empire have been changing their citizenship laws to make more descendants (including grandchildren and even great-grandchildren in some cases) of their former citizens eligible for citizenship. The four “Visegrad countries” discussed in this video are Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary.
Due to America’s status as a prime destination country for immigrants from this region of Europe in the second half of the 1800s and first half of the 1900s, millions of Americans qualify for citizenship by descent in these countries collectively. Most are totally unaware.
Each of these four countries are members of the European Union (“EU”) and thus citizens of these countries enjoy the right of residence and work permission in any of the 27 EU countries including Austria, France, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Italy, and others.
