Lovely orange trees, looking very healthy with lush dark green leaves and dense canopies. You may have noticed how they've got flower, developing new fruit & ripe fruit all at same time, only tree to do that, me thinks.
The new oranges get ripe from December onwards, sweetness depends on variety, soil and exposure to sun. Test ripeness by tasting. If too sharp give them a few more weeks. You can just pick as many as you need leaving the rest on the tree till summer. If soil is very dry the fruit may start to go dry from June onwards, and if you notice the oranges are loosing juice, just pick the rest of them and keep indoors, in cool dark spot like the adega, spread over newspaper. They'll keep another 2 months or so, good even if peel goes a bit limp.
The heavy blossom happens during spring, bees love it, the blossom falls to the ground and if you put a clean sheet of netting or plastic around the tree you can collect the blossom to dry for making orange blossom tea or essence for flavouring cakes & sweets.
Best prunning time? I think you can do a light prunning around now, to remove surplus branches from inside middle of the tree that are just sucking up energy. Now is a good time as you can see which branches have new fruit (leave those) and whic are just surplus to production. Cut also a bit of the tops off so the tree doesn't keep on growing up too quickly and that will direct its energy to producing fruit. If needed, heavy prunning (thick branches) can be done just before the spring, Jan – Feb. I don't think yours need heavy prunning yet.
Don't worry if you don't get it right. It'll grow back and you'll have other chances.
Lemon trees don't like too much cutting, but they also grow slowly, not needing it much, only the tops maybe.
On very dry & hot summers citrus trees love being watered, a good soak of the ground around them occasionally, will ensure they'll produce large & juicy oranges in winter. If you have the water, of course.
While doing your home renovations, you could put the waste water from sinks & bath to go directly to your trees, but don't leave it to run constinuously to same trees as they don't like it, alternate one week to a row of trees the next week to another row.
You can plan to plant new trees in rows with waste water in mind.
Happy gardening!
Wow so pleased for you waiting in anticipation for your next video! Cannot wait! Please upload more often xx
I so enjoyed watching this video, i was laughing until the end.
The Lamp, stove cleaning..lol I think i must also clean my stove with a broom, seems it is
quicker . Send Tom and Jerry to Cape Town, i will sort them out..
Remind me, 6°c , ur in the far north of portugal, that's too cold
👋🏻 I'm Portuguese, 1,54 cm tall, my dad 1,57 cm my mum 1,49 🤷🏻♀️ 😁 now maybe you can understand the ceiling lamps
Portuguese people were substantially shorter a few decades ago, poor nutrition.
I believe you've jumped some of your major hurdles! You two seem very focused. Sooo happy your belongings arrived safely and on time. Now that Zac's tools have arrived, a lot of jobs can get checked off the list! Keep pushing forward!🙂
Ah, the good old style fuses… Been there, done that. Many times! Don't bother looking for replacements, they don't exist anymore and I think you can guess why. ; )
Since you're eventually going to redo the whole installation, the best thing to do is replace the fuse box with a new one (I suggest one with capacity for 10 circuit breakers, just in case you need to expand the circuitry in the future) and put two new circuit breakers for now, just to avoid situations like the one you had. : )
27:20 – That's not a boiler per se, that's a water heater ('esquentador' in Portuguese) and a good one, too. About the istallation, that wasn't a hack job, it's how they're supposed to be installed. Water heaters are never fixed to the walls, they're just hung on those two hooks, which are supplied by the manufacturer (every manufacturer, actually), along with the respective plugs. That fixation system is sufficient for the water heaters' weight and it's more practical than a fixed system because they need to be removed often during their lifetime for maintenance, repairs or replacement.
30:45 – It's never that simple, especially when you're not an expert on gas appliances. Unfortunately you live in a place where there's probably no one who could repair the water heater because it can be repaired and at a much lower cost than having to buy a new one. But I understand the urgency. : )
stopped to watch as I used to live in Penzance, for a while in Heamoor. Fascinating being a fly on the wall in someone else's adventure.. good luck.
Greatt progress… You new litle house is lovely… Whit a litle bit ir work and love it will became beautiful… But be preparei for cold Wintar on central Portugal… 💖🥰👍🏻👏🏻😍😘
Great video. Got one NIF so far, were possibly going to be in Portugal by next month but alas – stock market downturn. Maybe in a couple of years … keep well. Love from NZ 🙂
Oh god, a bed✔️. Shanty town-esque installation. Rat traps. How to set up house in a hovel. Well done, have yourselves a sleep-in and enjoy a tea in bed. Great content, guys.
was it the bi metal strip, was pilot lit?
I have a feeling that your home and property is going to be really nice. You are both hard workers. Can't wait for the next video.
Great video, enjoyed watching, looking forward to seeing further Vlogs on your adventures.
Great effort guys. Love your enthusiasm and laid back approach. Quite a change to your comfortable bungalow in the ring of Mounts Bay, there must be something special about Portugal and your new place to give that up. I like the way the courtyard links the house indoor an outdoor, it will provide you with a delightful living space and seclusion. Thank you so much for taking us along.
I think it's time to invest in a new water heater….After 10 years and no one living there at least you got a couple days out of it…
Need to bleed the gas line there is a small screw piece near the inlet
Your electrics are standard stuff to be honest be very careful where you drill to get around the kettle buy one that works on your stove you can always boil water on a stove or log burner I would suggest you change all your bulbs and or light fittings for LED ones draw less current doesn’t trip your old electrics hopefully some of that helps
Rustic blue kitchen table with drawers is beautiful. Would be a shame not to save it for outside kitchen. Btw rats will get into all cardboard boxes. Recommend getting cat(s) and plastic boxes. Great vid. You both are natural storytellers
What a journey, but you have the will and determination to succeed. Good luck, can't wait to see what you will have achieved by the next video as you are making great progress. Hope the weather picks up for you. Love your idea to open up the sitting room to a roof terrace over the chicken coop. Are the interior walls solid or can you reconfigure the internal layout easily. If easy to configure I would make some of the outside buildings a guest suite and give yourselves more space in the house.👏👏💖

The low light always go on top of the dining table.
Hi Ginny & Zack
Transformation already. Old electrical. But easy sorted. The place looks good been busy guys ,can't wait to see more. I'm all eyes, keep up the amazing progress 👏
Loving your vids from Australia. Enjoying your adventure. Keep it coming.
That central chandelier that you feel is too low, it was most probably over a dining table that way people would go around it.☀️🌹🌤️
It's good to see how you discover your new home 🏡
WHAT A LOVELY PIECE OF MUSIC FOR YOUR 1ST TIMELAPSE…WHAT IS THAT?…PLEASE POST WHAT THAT WAS, THANKYOU…IMMENSELY ENTERTAINING & INFORMATIVE, GINNY & ZACK?…ALL THE BEST 🙏🏻;)
I can imagine what with weather the boiler and the electrics you are thinking was this a good idea to move here….but of course it was you will over come all these issues and eventually you will have a beautiful home to be proud of..its looking better already with sweep and a mop….cant wait until the next time …love Ted xxx
You two are rather resilient. Swinging that broom brought on quite a transformation. I must admire you because I wouldn’t been that calm when meeting the inevitable spiders and other critters whom you evicted. Let’s see, no heat, no hot water, no bed, funky electricity, a leaky toilette, not much of a cooking stove. I can promise that it can only get better 😀.
…I had a water heater just like this one, and it stopped working because the heating spout was clogged… Inside the spout there is a kind of washer with a very small hole and with the tip of a needle you can unclog it.. . it was like new and lasted a few more years… All the best…😉✌
Forgive me if you already know this… rats have brilliant memories! They can chew through most things bar thick glass and stone jars. They hate fresh mint and wire wool. So when amending the rat/mouse holes stuff the holes with wire wool, shards of thick glass or old stone jars. If you still have bother, leave a cotton ball soaked with peppermint oil in the rat/mouse holes also. They breed at an alarming rate…so don't underestimate them! If setting traps; they are attracted to peanut butter and or dark chocolate (rather than cheese). They have a phenomenal memory… Sat Nav like….so if you release them close to home…they will find you again very soon! Good luck!.
Be careful with vines on an inside fire, they produce a glue like substance which will stick to your flue … but they're brilliant for an outside BBQ and add taste!! Try to get other wood for inside purposes! Love your set up!
😀
I was helping a man in his seventies ,years ago, put in a new plug socket he pulled the rubber insulation off the wires cut the ground wire and hooked it up.vi was so stunned I had no words! Last week I looked at a 1940 house to buy and many of the sockets have the ground wires cut off . So either that wire contains no ground or there are other people from way back when thinking ground wires are just there to cut off ? 😳🤔😂❣️
thanks for sharing 🙂
Hi Zack and Ginny I can just picture Zack with a hammer over the mouse holes just like Tom and Jerry, kitchen looks organised now bet your looking forward to a good cooked meal, that boiler looked lethal best of luck with that.
🍻🍻🍻
Wine fixes everything 😁
The low humidity in summer doesn't hold heat in the air. So there are large temperature swings… could be 30 °C during the day and then 15 °C at night. Good sleeping weather though. An insert or woodstove(salamander) is ideal.
I know I’m stating th obvious, but just worried about the dog getting hurt by accident if you set the mouse traps and they get set off… you have already worked hard and lots more to do.. it’s gonna be great 👍🏻
Plumbers, Electricians, and General Contractors could move from Britain and help people fix up all of their old homes and make a fortune. Also out in the country of the U.S. someone comes around and fills peoples propane tanks, which are 250 gallons, every month. They need someone out there to start that business.
15:40 there is a better way of catching rats than that old school mouse trap, reminds me of ones I used to make when I was a child in Morocco 😂😂😂 really old school
Oh the challenges..🥳The perservance..and your Cornish way of telling the story…brilliant Zac!😁👍👌I know the feeling when the boiler goes no heat on a Saturday night at 8.30pm..20miles from town ..home alone .. ..Middle of a Wyoming snowstorm. The technican arrived 1 hr later .System only 8 yrs old!..Thought it was the mother board ..turns out it was the gas line ..like yours was wanting to click on but .."nadda" ! Took 4 days for the Motherboard that wasn't needed in the end! 🤨😏So off to town next day to buy an ..electric heater and a good old Kerosene one ..threw the heat out …Open plan not the best to heat either ….Ain't life grand ! What I would give for a log burner …not alot of trees out here. .Sadly. 🥳🥳…Thank goodness for wine 🍷…it will get you through 😁👍😋
Can only get better!
People buy these old places and dont upgrade the electric wires and everything else and not all Portuguese are short im over six feet tall 😂and just likenot all Americans are tall our Brits see tons of migits in the USA😂😂😂
Amazing clean up with only 1 broom and a couple of folks with a mission! 💪🏼
Prune your orange/lemon trees after the coldest part of the winter and before it gets hot! So late winter early spring. Never cut more than 20% off (no you don’t need a ruler and calculator!) each year or you won’t get fruit. The centre of the tree does not need to be open as orange trees don’t need much light for the fruit to develop. Deciduous trees tell you when to prune ie when all the leaves drop off…start pruning.
