It’s November 1st and that means it’s time to update on all of the fun and exciting things that happened in October on my off grid homestead in Central Portugal. It was a fine month, indeed, with visits from my parents and one of my best friends and we got loads of stuff done and had fun doing it!
November is shaping up to be a good one on my little quinta with a variety of jobs on the cards like insulating my metal door with cork, making a window in the door (or attempting to… I have no idea how to make a window!), fixing and cleaning the flue for my janky wood stove, some work on the land, and a few other exciting things! I’m a bit sad everyone is gone but I’m looking forward to getting to work while the sun shines and the weather isn’t too chilly (yet!)
For anyone interested in making a contribution to my project, there’s a Thanks button up above but, as I mentioned in the video, you could also use Paypal if that’s more convenient. My Paypal address is * travoholic@yahoo.com *.
I hope you enjoy this little update and a summary of November’s plans. Thanks for watching, as always, and I’ll see you Friday for my usual weekly video!

Great video and interesting project. Just subd.
Hi! Congrats on all you've gotten done!
I'm glad you are going to dedicate some time to learning Portuguese, it will make life here much easier. Please make sure that the course you're going to take is European Portuguese and not Brazilian Portuguese. It is not the same and locals will be more willing to help you if you are trying to learn their language.
About that door: great idea to put a window in! A dutch door would be even better. I would like to suggest that before you start hacking at that door you might first visit some local salvage yards, Ferro Velhos, and see if you can find one that the right size that already has the window. Windows and doors are the most salvaged items and there are a ton of them out there. You might find the perfect door already made. You might luck out and find one of those ancient thick wooden doors that you could cut down perfectly to size. Some salvage yards will actually resize a door for you if you are good at negotiating, which you probably are. Anyway it's a good place to find the windows you need at a much much lower cost and maybe some other stuff you might need. If you're like me, it is also an awesome afternoon well spent digging through trash to find treasures. Good luck! 💜
Thanks!
Thanks
I love your to do lists keeps you on track started doing it myself because of you. Btw you pronounced my name better than people who know me 😆
Great video as always. May be a local neighbor would harvest your olive and in return may give you some oil or prune your trees! 😄
I do like this beginning list and end of month recap. So much so that I’ve started it on my 120 year old house. I know you mentioned it but have already forgotten, in which scenario do you receive more of the donation, PayPal or Superthanks? (And who’s Laura?😂)
Hi Kirsty , love your lists, and achievements. You cans see watch you are doing and as another solo small homesteader it is not easy and you are creating your home from scratch. You are creating such a special unique home for yourself . Love it.
You good at planning and it seems that you have a Master degree, congrts
Plz plz slow down on talking and talking and just do. Your parents' presence made for interesting content.
Thanks, love to support projects on a channel i love. Inspires me. Window doesnt have to be square if you use plexiglass and silicone seal it, leaving the support sections in.
Kirsty, if you have a goal each day it works well. Not anything unachievable. Maybe you might do the ones on the list that are easy first and slowly work on the harder ones each day. I have a pile of rocks that I need to move along with spreading soil, weeding that has got out of hand and organising my landscaping along with lots more. I work on each one slowly rather than trying to bust myself and not enjoying it. You are doing amazingly well. I get it, feeling a little alone but just enjoy each day and have breaks. Cheers
Also….. clear plastic shower curtains- esp ones that people no longer want in their houses, make great recycled plastic pieces for temporary greenhouses. I keep refashioning mine into new spaces and they are durable. In a pinch I have also used recycled bubble wrap sheets
Want a speedy door insulator? I would up a tension rod in the doorway and put a curtain up that you close at night. Even a cotton sheet/curtain would create a draft barrier and insulate. If you want a great insulator put a curtain rod over the whole door frame and use a thick/dense weave fabric. I like to use cotton velvet. Then when you don’t need it anymore, you can use the curtain elsewhere. (To instantly cover up mess for example. If you can’t see it….it’s gone!)
HELLO KIRSTY…LOVELY TO SEE MIKEY'S BEAUTIFUL FACE AT THE START…LOTS TO DO, BUT, YOU'LL GET IT DONE, WITH PERSISTANCE & FORTITUDE…GREAT TO HAVE YOUR FAMILY WITH YOU FOR A BIT, AND A GREAT HELP AS WELL…WE'VE DEGRADED DOWN TO THE LATE 30S F. HERE IN VANCOUVER, ALL THE BEST…🙏🏻;)
Did sinead buy the land, or still ongoing
Best of luck with November jobs, so far things are going well.
November looks good, having the patio will be good before winter hits x
Hi from Bulgaria, I am also gathering and cutting up gash wood and I have a decent amount, also winterising my doors and windows this month, its important never to finish the project, I am doing four operations which all feed off one another, I am reducing one area and the soil is feeding the raised beds, and the good gash wood is constructing the raised beds and I have a pile of 10 yo rotted down wood also feeding the raised beds………….looks like a bomb site but it will all come together
Hi, yes, tidying never ends 😂. I was thinking, ithink you can get port-hole window kits, but thinking more, you could probs get any window, cut the metal hole and silicone it in? A bit like fitting a cat flap but higher up. I would also be overwhelmed by big masonry jobs, so i hear you. Good luck y saludos desde España
When you’re done with the flue/wood stove changes, please have a service specialist check it out before it gets too cold. The material you’ve exposed so far, shows that all are fire resistant but don’t discount carbon monoxide exposure.
So now you are organised for November……usually warm sunny days…..I always have a sunny birthday in UK its horribel!
Gas bottles will work more slowly when cold, and flare up when hot so put them in an insulated box is a good idea
I don't know where you are in Portugal, but thought that with your window woe's if you watch Cindy Vine Portugal – Video called Renovating a Ruin in Portugal Jazzing up a Metal Door pick up the window at 20:23 where it is shown. Another very helpful person is Nick who's channel is Portugal Project, he is I think a Builder, and I'm sure if you needed help or idea's (Help) he'd be glad to do so. Great though to watch everything you are doing.
You got a lot accomplished in October. I look forward to seeing your home improve in November. Your sense of humor makes it fun to watch.
I always enjoy yr vids and look forward to the next one each time!
Not sure if this is applicable to your situation, but we used to have to disassemble our stovepipe to clean every year, which was a whole production and extremely messy! Then we put in a double walled pipe and have hardly had any build up inside since. At that time (maybe ten years ago?) you couldn't just buy a double walled pipe of the correct size in France, so we made one from two pipes of different sizes, one inside the other. Works like a charm!
…challenge yourself…set a 10 minute timer for each job ….😁😅❤
Oooh, the door project will be interesting! Imagine all the light… you probably have already imagined it, haha. And how cosy will it be to have the fire going again? Looking forward ot hearing how your friend's land purchase went. xo
Hi Laura I just have a question ⁉️ where is your toilet?
Saude!
Another great blog! I love watching your wood working-ive been trying making stuff for a year-you are brave with the tools-great to see you use Japanese saws-i love mine. Looking forward to seeing more soon 😊
Go onto Cindy Vine Portugal and look for the video called renovating a ruin in Central Portugal jazzing up a metal door. Her door was like yours. She insulation the door plus put a window into it. Just a thought it might be a beginner start to your project.
