Hi guys, I am Alex.

I am an Ukrainian expat who moved to Portugal.
No one in my family ever did any farming, But I discovered that I am very passionate about farming so recently I’ve purchased this 28 hectares Farm in Central Portugal, with the intention to start a small scale farm raising worms, cattle and sheep.

In this little farm I am also planning to build an off grid home, and be as self sufficient as possible, by growing my own food.

I created this channel to share my journey with the world, The journey of a first generation farmer, that is starting with no prior knowledge and experiences.
That maybe all the mistakes that I will make along this journey, and all the fails maybe will help some of you to learn from my mistake and not make them yourself.
I want to bring value and inspire people who are thinking about farming.

I am not a filmmaker or an editor, I am just a simple guy with a camera.

  1. I could hear your father cursing trying to get the pipe and gasket together even though he never uttered a word!! 😉
No one likes to feel taken advantage of, however I believe working symbiotically with your neighbor is very important. Right now you have land with grass that is not being utilized, why not let your neighbors sheep eat it? It isn't costing you anything, BUT could provide you with goodwill dividends in the long run. Work cooperatively. I sincerely hope you did not just take the ram.

  2. Good job Alex, it’s looking great 👍
To be honest didn’t like what you did to your neighbor, the best part about rural Portugal it’s how neighbors help each other and I tell you if you’re in trouble everyone will gather and come help you, it pays off to solve things in a peaceful way, everyone will have your back if you do that. You never know when you’ll need your neighbor 😊

  3. I came across your channel and started watching. At first I thought you in the SW USA where the land some what. Then I thought Mexico, since none of the plumbing parts
looked familiar, I read you were in Portugal havivig moved from Ukraine, WOW…I
will be watching you from NE Georgia, USA

  4. Mate the sheep are cleaning the land for you and preventing wild fires, those are a huge problem in Portugal and you can even get a fine from you Municipality if your land is overgrown grass and bush.
Make an agreement with him e pays for the pasture giving you the meat from one of his sheep.

  5. I do agree with you about your neighbour being disrespectful about just assuming he can use your land without asking you.. but I guess forgiveness makes you the better man 🙏🏻 you and your dad work very hard and it’s paying off.. things are progressing nicely 😀

  6. Maybe you can look into solar powered, electric tape or fencing to use around the areas where sheep come in. Not fair on you, but it would keep your growing flock in, his sheep out, and could possibly prevent any issues from escalating. Good luck!

  7. Your dad appears to have knowledge in the trades. He is quite handy. I saw you now have a laser as well. That will come in handy. Love this pod cast Alex. It's fun watching you restoring this stone building. See you next week.

  8. i was once working in Ireland – and the hotel owner didn't pay me, i threatened that my friend Dima from Ukraine would drop by – i was paid the next day 🙂

  9. Running through your house and helping with the plumbing is funny from where I'm sitting LOL Non the less you mustn't fall out with your community. Try a little humour '' hey … When are you going to send those sheep up with a bottle or 2 of that home made wine ? Then you learn of the wild boar and say '' well thank you for helping me keep the grass down. '' Offer to help with securing his feild maybe ? I wish you all the best

  10. Hi guys, I have watched many building projects, all the different techniques and modem materials…… and the above have all evolved from what you are doing…..love it. Colly London

  11. The way you handled the trespassing property / sheep situation was exactly right.
You went to town to ask around, you posted on online groups asking who the property belongs to.
Once owner of the property / sheep was located, he was then aware of the said problem and yet it persisted and was not prevented.
Nor was an agreement entered into where upon you agree to a grazing arrangement.
    You went above and beyond.

In some states the law is such,

    *Trespassing animals—Restraint—Damages and costs.

Any person suffering damage done by any horses, mules, donkeys, cattle, goats, sheep, swine, or any such animals, which shall either trespass upon any land enclosed by lawful fence as provided in chapter 16.60 RCW or trespass while running at large in violation of chapter 16.24 RCW may retain and keep in custody such offending animals until the owner or person having possession of such animals shall pay such damage and costs, or until good and sufficient security be given for the same.*

(as you stated there was loss/damage to your fruit and olive trees)

  12. HELLO ALEX & PAPA…YOU DID THE RIGHT THING WITH THE SHEEP, HANDLED IT MORE DIPLOMATICALLY THAN I WOULD HAVE…AND YOU GOT THE DESIRED RESPONSE (HOPEFULLY, HE UNDERSTANDS YOUR RIGHT TO YOUR LAND NOW)…THE LITTLE RAM GAVE A SNIFF TO ANGELA & SHE HAS, INITIALLY, REBUFFED HIM…BUT, THAT IS A TEMPORARY THING…THEY WILL ADJUST & BE GREAT FOR EACH OTHER & YOU MAY END UP WITH MORE SHEEP THAN YOUR NEIGHBOUR IN THE LONG RUN…THE WORK ON THE PLACE LOOKS GREAT…ALL THE BEST…🙏🏻;)

  13. Doing a great job well done great teamwork. when I first see all the sheep I thought you bought new sheep. it’s not very good when They come on your land I wouldn’t have minded if they’d asked . I would be like you not very happy at all if they keep coming in like that you did the right thing .Thame care

  14. Hi, Alex!
I hope the situation with the sheep has been resolved definitively.
In your reply to a comment, you explained further what the problem was. Perhaps, your neighbor was used to using the pastures for free before you bought them, so he tried to continue to do so. Obviously, you are right to ask for compensation for the use, even if the animals were eating only grass. But since they are eating fruit trees and olive trees, payment becomes even more necessary. In fact, it was a good deal for him, since the police or the courts were not called by you (which was and still is your right). If everything is solved with an agreement between you, all the better, but unfortunately there are people who are xenophobic, beware.

The ram is much smaller than Angela; I hope he is healthy and you both can be companions and start your flock. I am curious what name you will give him, and looking forward to the roof. Hugs to you, your dad, and the Ram family. 😉

  15. Great ! Inside nothing you will have soil, water,… Each step will make your life more comfortable and make the project move faster…
Have good relationships with your neighbors. In exchange for you letting their sheep graze on your property, they can advise you how to create your own flock, how to sow according to the climate and the land of that area. You have many ideas and your father has experience I imagine. But Ukraine is not Portugal. Listening to the locals can benefit you and it doesn't hurt them. This has been done since the world is world. Exchange moves dreams. At the moment you have benefited…

  16. The sheep will fertilize and clean your tall grass and by walking and disturbing the soil the help nutrient get in the soil. Don’t get worked out until you start planting or using every inch of your land. Be patient and remember a good relation with the neighbor is worth gold, you plan to live in the land for many years to come. Your land was no man’s land for many years, it takes time to change peoples behaviors. As you move in the property, plant and have your own animals a electric fence or stack stone wall.

  17. Hi Alex, the sheep may be doing a good job in your property. They're grazing all that waste grass and helping to fertilize the soil. Great video as always

  18. Your father is like a silent movie actor- just being a building hero in the background, whilst Angela is the 🌟 what will you name her new leading man? Raymond the Ram, perhaps?! 🤣🤣🤣🐑🐑❤️

  19. Let the sheep out ASAP!!! Its definitely not worth getting your farmer-neighbour offside. No matter what, especially as you are "new" to the area and a foreigner. You realistically risk getting the whole community offside, and that would be hard to come back from. Maybe consider negotiating with him for the grazing and get him to do a few useful things in return for you. Its a better way to not have him impose on you; a Win-Win situation for all.
