So how do you avoid getting called up for jury duty back in the States?
😘🌹❤️
Great content. Overcome your fears, and create a support group. I also agree with Schwab and Surfshark VPN.
Thank you for the honest and useful advises 👌
Another great video! Such insightful commentary too – it is very helpful. We are travelling to Madeira in 2023 and will look for you as we wander the island. Stay well!
Thank you, guys, for the new video. Always enjoying to see new places you explore. Could you shows us please the surrounding area of where you live, if not already done such a video?
Thank you for another thought provoking and informative video for us future expats, you always share great information and content. Thank you Michael
One of the most important things you mention, is dealing with family after immigrating to another country. In my experience, it is often expressed as an accusatory question, "Why isn't X good enough for you? It certainly is good enough for me!" Yes, one can feel the anger/ rage, and nothing one says will eliminate it. The best one can hope for, is to be soothing and calm, and to reduce the level of aggression. Everyone in North America is either an immigrant, or a descendant of immigrants. Yes, that even applies to my Mohawk ancestors who have been in NA for an estimated 10 000 years. In our family, the most recent immigrants, among ancestors, moved to NA in 1947. For younger generations, people may have moved there, say, ten years ago.
There can be many reasons for immigrating. Some are personal. One finds a person one wants to share a life with, who comes from some other country. Some are economic. Not all countries have recessions simultaneously. It can be a sense of adventure, or the fact that one does not seem to fit into the place of one's birth or development. Escaping from war and/or famine are other common reasons.
There can be many responses to accusatory questions, and it depends on who is asking/ accusing. I found it much more difficult to respond to my mother, than to friends who are about the same age. When dealing with parents (or children) the one response that worked out best was to acknowledge that X is a good place to live, but it can be challenging for some people. At the same time, there are people who seem incapable of moving anywhere. While I live about 7 000 km away from my birthplace following a direct great-circle route, I have a sister who has never lived outside a 2 km radius from our childhood home. I don't believe she has ever flown anywhere. People are different.
When I engage in conversations about the country where I currently live, frequently compared to country where I was born, I have a list of good and "not-so good" aspects of both countries, so that there is a more balanced discussion. My goal is never to win an argument, but for both participants to have a better understanding of the circumstances that made one decide to remain or to immigrate.
Another great video…I enjoy the ones where you discuss the little things. They seem to help calm the uncertainty. Thanks for the time you invest in the videos – I’m always happy to see when you’ve uploaded a new one.
I so enjoy the journey as you're talking. This is alot of good suggestions. Does your son like being there?
Great video. Not easy making such a move as a solo person. I am visiting Madeira very soon and I am excited. Hope I can meet you guys.
Keep doing the thinking Mr. Wise, great job.
Thanks, Al, for another great video!
Great Vlog very helpful and beautiful scenery, thanks for sharing
Hey, Allen, whom are investing with from abroad? Some US brokers don't let people use their accounts based on foreign IP address.
My family & I just moved to Terceira in the Azores . Big move from San Diego California . We have big plans to start our own family business out here and so far everything has been going great. I came upon your channel in the process of our move , which I thought was pretty cool. Anyways just wanted to stop by and say hello and good luck in all your new adventures 💜
