Our Designer of the Year Sophie Ashby on decorating her rented Georgian house | Design Notes

Just as the pandemic hit, Sophie Ashby and her husband, the fashion designer Charlie Casely-Hayford, moved into an early 19th-century house in Spitalfields. It was a rental–an opportunity to enjoy more space than they had in their small flat in West London, and a stop-gap before buying a house of their own. Rather than being frustrating as an interior designer–indeed, House & Garden’s current Interior Designer of the Year–and restricted by the limitations of what you can do to rental property.

‘Actually, I found it really liberating’, she says. ‘I didn’t have to worry about any of the architectural framework of the building. It had already been made beautiful so I was able to come in and fill it up with beautiful things.’

  1. Can anyone tell me the name of the artist who took the portrait of the Black woman, in front of a red background smoking? It so stunning and has been on my mind since watching this video! Any leads appreciated!

  2. Aw a diversity winner! Congrats on picking a mediocre dwelling. I nominate the girl from your last video that actually did something of her own individual merit with a smaller space and didn't just pick the trendy skin color shade to marry and posted it up on the walls. It's a very beautiful home but anyone who organically reads/sees this channel agrees it's very nice but not the best thing of the whole year. Also why don't any of the other comments on here have any replies? Little bit odd. 🤔

  3. This video almost made me cry, this home is so beautiful. I collect art it brings me such joy when some thing moves me, my one drawback is that I dont display them as I should, so thishas inspired me to get going.
