So what do you do when you lack enough visual content for your non-fiction video? Go experimental! Go meta! 🙂
This short episode is important to the plot of our journey — the decision about where to land in Portugal, that important first home. I use our trip to my family home in Delaware — delivering sentimental items we’re not taking to Portugal — as the narrative structure for the reveal. It also sets up a narrative tension between our first-tier and second-tier choices for later episodes. There’s nothing fake about this. Where we finally land will depend almost entirely on where we find the “best” apartment.
There’s plenty of story to tell regarding what “best” means.
Tier 1:
Aviero (central)
Espinho (central)
Tier 2:
Cedofeita (central Porto)
Matosinhos (historic district)
Coimbra (Norton de Matos)
Tech notes:
This entire episode was filmed on my Google Pixel 4 using an inexpensive gimbal for most shots. Shot at 60fps and slowed to 24 fps.
I also used the Pixel to record the audio, which I hadn’t intended to do. I forgot a thing 🙂 Anyway, I used the native microphone and recorded with the Audio Lab app — a very nice tool with a ton of useful features.
Edited on my Asus desktop that I brought with me to give to my niece. I bought an Asus Proart Studiobook to take to Portugal. I’ll be using it fulltime when I return from this trip.
I played around with one of the LUTs installed in DaVinci Resolve called Crash Course Orange and Teal — just for fun. I didn’t worry myself too much with balancing everything for this episode.

Good luck! I recommend connecting with Speak in Aveiro next time you're there – Valeria is a great lady and can give you her perspective on moving there
Another great video! Thank you!
Thanks for the video! I am enjoying following your journey.
