In today’s live stream video we discuss the cost of living in countries we spent time in from 2020 to 2022. Each of the countries have many foreigners calling their country home due to the low cost of living and quality of life. The average US Retiree on Social Security receives $1,550 a month, and a couple on Social Security receives over $2,500 a month. A US Expat living on Social Security can expect a lower cost of living in Romania, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Croatia, Serbia, Ecuador and Turkey, when compared to the living costs in the US, Britain, Australia, and many EU countries.

All the coutries we reviewed are outside of the Schengen. The Schengen Agreement has ruined the dream for millions around the world to slow travel through Europe. Gone are the days of crossing from Spain to France and resetting your clock in a neighboring country. If your country is not a member of Schengen you have to look at these 26 countries as one, an American can only spend 90 days out of 180 days between all 26 countries. Romania and a handful of European countries including the UK are options to live in to reset your Schengen clock. If you’re an American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealander, or from South Africa a Non-Schengen country like Romania should be in consideration for your investment budget. Even if you’re not choosing residency in Romania, it’s a great place to live 90 out of 180 days if you need to leave the Schengen. There are some residency options available through a few Schengen countries, but most of these require €250,000-€1,000,000 invested in or paid to the country. Italy has some options that are vaguely written and subjective to local decisions that can be inconsistent.

Do you want to live abroad as an Expat? Are you looking for affordable and viable options? We are exploring the world to see what it’s like to live in a country, and also discover if Residency is an option.
We began our retirement in March of 2020 with the intent to travel the world, spending 1-3 months in a country or location. We want to see what it’s like to live there and not simply visit, and we want to share these experiences and the costs with whoever wishes to follow along.

Appreciate the breakdown, very interesting. That's great that Julie keeps spreadsheets, really good idea. My grandfather was from Poland, I will be interested in seeing what it's like. Would like to visit myself one day, but I think Montenegro is #1on the list. Drive safely and thanks for the update, I like these analysis discussions as much as I do seeing the sights as there is a lot of information to consider.
Great video guys. You are going to love Portugal and Spain. Do not miss Porto,Ericeria, Sevilla and Granada.
Think you will get back to Lake Ohrid?
Think you will get back to Lake Ohrid?
glad you are enjoying Sibiu
Great video!! Thank you!! You are correct that many countries in Europe are less expensive compared to Ecuador.. However, beware, almost all countries in Europe will collect tax from foreign sourced income.. This includes social security and pension income sourced from the U.S. There are a handful of tax treaties that will NOT tax U.S. social security benefits, but almost all WILL tax U.S. sourced pensions. And to make things worse, most countries will take your social security benefit into account when determining the tax bracket for your other income. In addition, it doesn't take much income to quickly be in a mid to high progressive tax bracket in most European countries. It would not be out of the ordinary for a U.S. pensioner to pay 30% net on their worldwide income.. Some countries like Portugal, Spain, and Italy have special tax regimes in place to lower taxes for new tax residents. Portugal offers a 10 percent income tax for 10 years under it's NHR tax program. However, after 10 years, look out because an individual will be taxed at regular Portugal tax rates and believe me, they're nothing to sneeze at.. There are double taxation rules between many countries, but all that means is that if you owe 10 percent tax in the U.S. and 30 percent tax in Portugal, Portugal can only require that you pay 20 percent (30%-10% already paid in U.S.) I believe in one of your videos, you spoke to a Serbian lawyer/tax specialist. He mentioned that officially, foreign sourced pensions are taxable, however, in reality a blind eye was given at the tax authority. Personally, I wouldn't bank my future income on the assumption that the law of Serbia won't be followed completely by the tax authority in the future. It's a complicated matter, but one should definitely look at the long term consequences for moving to another country..
The CIA has been training ukrainian troops for years and it was our American leaders who started the war. Is it any coincidence that biden, pelosi, romney and kerry all have children on the boards of ukrainian energy companies?
Yes absolutely it is unfortunate what happened to Ukraine because of the war but you have been traveling all over the world and my question is how about Palestine and Iraq and Syria and Yemen ? Do you know Ukraine military went to Iraq and they were the most aggressive army Against civilian?
The falling Lira helps too, but over all Turkey is very cheap.
Be fair, Turkey is not a good place to retire for a westerner. One might feel opressed by the increasing islamic regime . Some germans ended in jail a while ago. Also non latin alphabet in some countries might be a problem. One wouldnt like not being able to read public texts all the time. So please tell the whole story
Croatia it's not cheap at all…!
Hi folks, i am wondering what is my best option. I am moving to Serbia asap from Australia to be with my future Mrs. For citizenship, putting marriage aside for a sec, am I better off starting a company or buying a property? Apparently, from what I know, a Company cannot buy property in Serbia. So how would I go buying a house or property in Serbia if I have a Company ie. how do I justify taking money out of my company and tx it to myself to buy a property in my own name, for tax purposes? In that case, would I be better off being a Sole Trader? I am asking, how do I go from having a Company to owning a property, in addition to the quickest or easiest way to get citizenship?
PS. Odessa, Ukraine is really nice. Spent a whole month there. Kiev, meh.
Thanks for the video. I didnt see any hiccups in the live stream 🙂 I look forward to seeing your videos on Budapest, Poland, Prague, and Spain. I spent 5 months in Spain in 2011 and loved it. I stayed mainly in Seville but did venture out to Rota and a few other places. The cost was definitely more expensive than the Baltic Countries but I am sure you will enjoy yourselves! The weather was beautiful. have fun guys!

Hi. While traveling in Europe, will you be flying or using the train? Also, is it possible to give me some info on what's needed to travel with your pets in Europe? Thanks
It is really not clear what the actual cost is. I wish you could at least give us some range, rather than non-stop adding some changes and options. At the end, I am really confused what living cost would be (other than Croatia, that was around 4500$). More structured approach with clear conclusion at the end for each country would be greatly appreciated.
