This has been our hardest week on our farm in Portugal, with no water thanks to a dried up spring, car disasters, bank issues and incessant rain it has felt completely overwhelming.

We are John, Tara, Crusoe and Sawyer Newby. A family of explorers who’s taken root in Northern Portugal where we’re renovating an abandoned farm into our dream off-grid homestead.
On and off, we have been traveling for over 20 years and have explored more than 160 of the world’s 193 countries, it’s been quite a journey, and now we are sharing our adventures weekly here on YouTube with new episodes EVERY SUNDAY.
BE BRAVE – THINK BIG – EXPLORE
Because we believe that lines across a map are more important than numbers in the bank.
Thanks so much for watching!!!

Best of luck with the car. The house looks great.
I know it’s frustrating but it’s worth it, keep on keeping on 😊😊😊
I agree you are in an overwhelming situation -basically two babies & a massive renovation. Give yourself some grace, take deep breaths AND try to sleep when you can. Life goes on and I’ve been there right where you are! It’s totally amazing what we women handle.
Bit of an anti climax. Thought the house might have burned down but no…. a broken gear lever.
I feel a bit conned.
Oh dear Tara, please give yourself grace realizing you are still dealing with postpartum hormones as well as everything else. What a week you had. Love John's positive attitude and ability to make you laugh.
It's popped orf. You remind me of my X Queen Liz RIP
We love you so much.
And we pray for you and your family.
God bless you always.🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️
I feel bad for you both of you! Best wishes on sorting it all out! I always enjoy watching and Caruso is so sweet! 😊
Sorry guys, not of this time and age BURNING you leftover bamboo. So polluting… And I think by flying all over the world, you consumed your share of polluting. Please, could you be a bit more considered about the future of the earth.
I think sometimes you just simply need to kick, scream and cry and repeat until eventually you will see insurmountable mountains become little hillocks and you will laugh with each other, love with other and find solutions that one day will become stories to recall about how you built a refuge in paradise for your family.
Easy fix yall got this /: 💕🙏✌🤟👍 oh I luv that chicken (:
Wow seeing Tara so at the end of her tether was really interesting to see. I say that supportively as I have just about convinced my best mate that this is the life to follow (and sent them the link to your channel, his Mrs needs a lot of convincing), and to see the reality is quite informative, and almost i don't know how to say this right, but a reality check. I'm sure its going to be overcome, as you said the Newby way is a positive way, but sometimes, life comes at you fast and throws you lemons. I am routing for you guys so that I can selfishly say "see even with that, its ok". Peace and love to you all x.
😯🙏❤🤗🇸🇪🇺🇦
Querida família eu estou a adorar os vossos vídeos. Vocês já são cidadãos Portugueses 😊😉🥰🥰🥰
Why are you taking the oven away, the house will lose all of its original characteristics
Thought you might enjoy these folks. https://youtu.be/C-eut_dYc3Y

Glad the gear stick broke when you were somewhere safe. You have a lovely family and a lovely home, as well as great local support from neighbours. Things will work out, if not the way you were expecting. P.s. we passed through Amarante this weekend on our way to Porto.
sending positive vibes & hugs, I know u are having to take care of kids and get home done/water, u are strong and are doing a great job so dont get discouraged. You are doing so much good, Chin up, only good things can come your way. Good is always rewarded w/good.
It is not easy when things go wrong. But keep up the faith, the sun rises every mornings. And you know what they say, "when life gives you lemons 🍋 , make lemon juice. 🥰
you got this guys……..eh….many happy days ahead….hugs are free….take all you need
Well, you know I adore you & your family ~ Though we have never even met, I literally hope someday.. some how we do! ♥ I pray a tremendous blessing over all of your work and plans; I pray a hedge of protection over each of your sweet souls, I pray comfort, abundance, calm & LOVE overflowing for all of you. Biggg big hugs from Ohio {{We are looking all over Portugal & also Southern France for the right fit for us — so maybe one day- God willing- in person!! 😅😁you never know!}} My DH just retired & we both love all of your sincere effort to fully live. You set SUCH a wonderful example for your littles… of using ALL of your immeasurable talents and bringing strength & resolution to the table. It is all working together to build a lovely life. You are a terrific inspiration to so many!! Finding joy in the mundane is over half the battle I believe.
HANG IN THERE NEWBYS ♥♥♥♥🧔👱♀👦👶 xoxo
Farm reno going horribly wrong – I thought a house wall would fall down. Glad you are all safe !
Forçaaaaaaaaaaaa… Tudo se resolve… Sempre haverá momento difícil… Mas o sol e sorriso retornam pela manhã!! Beijinhos🇧🇷🎼🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶!
Very good Luck you were able to make it home before the gear shift broke. I remember my husband, before he was my husband, had a stick shift Mustang 1965 and he was rebuilding the car and a new shifter had not arrived. He just drove the car with a VICE GRIP clamped down on the gear shaft!!! Worked fine! And that was a Standard Shift so had to do a lot of shifting with that Vice Grip clamp. 🙂
Bless you, it’s horrible when you get days when everything seems to go wrong but I agree with other comments, at least you were at home when it happened. The water will be sorted out because you have such good friends and neighbours and nice things happen to nice people which is exactly what you are. 💕
I have a Huusk knife. I love it.
So glad it happened in your driveway and not on an open road. In South Africa (where I grew up) they just attached a screwdriver in there and used that when the gear stick broke. 😂 I know how hard it is starting over in a new country, done it a few times myself. It can be super frustrating at times, but so worth the experiences you'll have along the way. Sending big hugs. And all the best for the municipal water hook up too!
Take it easy Tara. Look on the bright side a healthy great family. The car and all the others that break are just stuff and are replaceable. Take and be happy as you make us all proud.
Ah bless you. I so wished i could have given her a big hug. You guys are great and although there are some major hiccups i have a feeling some major luck is round the corner. Sending the vibes *
Just check the not the garage garage. It's probably has a gear shifter in it…. If you can't laugh what can you do.!
Some days/weeks are just fucked up and there's nothing you can do about it but state the obvious ("This day is fucked.") and carry on. You are all doing a great job in not letting yourselves being knocked over by life's shittiness. There'll be easier times ahead. Nothing is permanent. Just duck and take cover for a moment and take a break whenever you can.
It is definitely overwhelming when things do not go to plan. Frustrating is an understatement, however I have faith all will go well in the end. I wonder if a glass enclosure with access doors would be good to connect the two homes together ( all season structure)? I know my mind goes into building mode as I look at structures in Portugal. Cheers hugs 🤗 stay strong
Oh poor Tara! There must be a law somewhere about having to go without tea! I'd go crackers without my cuppas!
The horrid thing about bamboo is that it's a grass and so it behaves just as badly as all the other types of grass do, so fire is indeed the only way to manage it… Appropriate for Bonfire Night though 😀
🎆🔥
Blimey! Everything really did go pear-shaped at the same time, and you were SO entitled to every one of those bleeps! I know I'm sending you *BIG HUGS * well after the events but they are genuine and I hope they help in some small way 🤗If I could come by and make you both tea and give you even just 5 minutes to breathe I would do.
You will be OK, I promise! Because if anyone can find a way around, over or through things it's The Newbys! 🌟
xx
Keep going your doing so well. There are always setbacks but your both incredible..and positive..loving your channel…xx
I'm sorry you had such a stressful week, but thank you for showing both the ups and downs of your journey. One day you'll look back at all you went through to have your dream property and it will all be worth it. And crying is your body's way of relieving pent up stress. Cry away – it's good for you and doesn't mean you are weak or not up for the task. You guys are amazing! Hope the next week was MUCH better!
I have been where you are. Not enough "bandwidth " to NOT be overwhelmed by situations as they roll by. Plant your feet on your portion of mother earth and take some deep breaths. There is always a solution.
❤God Bless
Hope your feeling a little better today Tara? I've been thinking about you all night since seeing you upset. "Keep your chin up duck " as we say here in Nottingham. 🫂
Always think about this. You are going to laugh about it one day. Good luck 👍
My dear family am sorry you’ve had such a challenging week. Sad to see Tara cry, she has always been a jolly and positive person. I do hope this coming week will be better for y’all. Looking forward to seeing the completion of your home, it will be lovely. You’ve made your own bonfire very nice what’s missing was the fireworks 😂😂. Take care of yourselves life will get better soon, stay blessed praying 🙏🏽for y’all ❤
Praying for you guys! *Hugs❤ it’s ok to cry
Aaaahh… poor Tara! Just stay positive and keep smiling. It's hard , im sure…and remember you've just had a baby…this is normal. Baby blues! Think what the place will look like in the future… and how you will enjoy it. Stay focused…there will be some rain, but there will be lots of sunshine as well.
