Finally it’s time to get around to tackling our bamboo invasion. We have a LOT of bamboo on our farm, and the only feasible way we can see to get rid of it is to employ some heavy machinery and dig it up. With the help of our neighbour Mario, and a huge digger, we hope we’re at least making a dent!

  1. I need to build a base for my bed and I’d love an instructional video on how to do it! Maybe y’all could start a supplementary DIY channel with more detailed instructions 😂 Love your work! It looks amazing!

  2. Anyone else not surprised that during pine cone collection, Caruso ran off for a fruit tree.
I needed some Caruso entertainment today, he did not disappoint, he's a cutie.

  3. Hurrah for the tractor. It is giving you a good Headstart on the bamboo jungle. Crusoe is such a darling little boy, and it’s always so much fun to see him running around the property. You three are truly blessed.

  4. Hi guys, hope your doing ok with the hot weather ? 🥵 It’s very hot here in Wiltshire. We finally got our motorhome back after the engine blew up and were able to enjoy the sun in our van at the Air Tattoo in Fairford for 5 nights it was amazing 🚐 John the bed looks fantastic well done 👏 I hope it’s comfortable. Great start with the bamboo 🎋take care guys Sarah and Lee ❤️

  5. Your friend was very right, even a small root is enough for it to sprout again, so please don't leave alone those piles more than a week, or they gonna grow again. (And I hope you'll be lucky to get a good chipper, but for safety reasons, I would burn later the shredded bamboo and wouldn't use it, not even for mulch or firewood.)
You were brave to start the digging job, because it's really gonna take years, and now you have to be on alert around the newly dug parts, -> immediately remove new sprouts when you see them (I think you should save your strength for this, because digging them out by hands is totally futile)
I'm absolutely "ROOTING" for you! 😀 Good luck with taking them out.
p.s.: don't be afraid to destroy a few things, while working, under that weather, they'll grow back fast and easily.
And I nearly forgot, here is a video about a natural way to stop erosion?, water damage on land, I highly recommend it to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuQScsROrEI

  6. GUYS, there is a simply, easy way to get rid of the bamboo. See if you want to invite 6-8 strong YT followers for a few days to a Bamboo Camp. They would put their tent on your property, bring their own lunch and dinner while you provide maybe breakfast. Put on an outhouse, you already have a shower outside, and plan shifts of a few hours a day for digging. You should vet the applicants and so they could have a great experience and be your YT heroes, and you have the job done for free. I tell you, people would come to help. Have a set of house rules.

  7. Love the way Crusoe is learning skills from you, the bed is divine enjoy dreamland. Wear a wet hankie knotted on the corners on your heads and wet cotton scarf around your necks to keep you cool😎😎😎in the heat. If you want to continue growing bamboo on the farm use a planter. A mammoth task to remove. Well done Mario. If you get any regrowth dig it out while it's small, Let the roots etc dry in the sun and burn it in the winter. The chips could regrow. You may find the bamboo is helping to prevent your land from eroding.

  8. You tube has some how to do things with bamboo . Little time consuming with a kid and one on the way Tara but just a thought. You seemed very hands on . Best of luck . Bamboo chairs in your farm bamboo beds etc .

  9. Love your channel big fan. John you can make a nice ladder with the bamboo you have . Those suckers are strong Tara can weave and make some buskets you guys are lucky to have all the natural resources in your farm. Its a lot of work but boy you guys are doing your best to keep it up. Will visit you guys when we come to Portugal. Love you guys. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

  10. No, no, nao! You cannot give bamboo any chance to come back. Burning is the only option, although you may have to wait a bit until it is safe to do. Even chipping will not destroy it, and any tiny little bit will sprout. If you mulch with it, every plant on your property will have its own personal bamboo barrier wall. We have done the removal by hand on two properties, and recognize the challenge. Good luck to you all.
And best wishes for a healthy, beautiful new addition to the family.

  11. I may be wrong but it sounds you are leaving the farm soon? I do hope you do something to cover all the bare dirt considering the kind of rainfall you get, risking erosion! You will lose all your topsoil.. quick fixes are to cover the area with jute netting and seed a meadow.. in fact if you could terrace before you go with your neighbor's digger. you will have the opportunity to give the bamboo another round of eradication. I am sorry there is so much on your land and bravo for tackling it..I would would be thorough with one section before tackling another. Remember bamboo follows water … so it is very well stealing the moisture from the rest of the land..But PLEASE you NEED to do some homework.. I am begging you !! I have given you many resources and I still hear a talk of a lawn .. not really appropriate for a mediterranean climate.. can you settle for a meadow? A meadow would not be a monoculture of some foreign grass that should be in England.. a meadow would be a native and diversified ecosystem that would support the orchards and protect the watershed… do not leave that land like that… There is a group of environmentalist who are doing some great restoration work not so far from you.. they are educated and professionals in restoration and permaculture who are homesteading in the north of Portugal… https://projectkamp.com/.. and here is their Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ub-I2m2PWAA..they do not have a problem clearing invasives like bamboo but replace it with a restoration/ productive plan! Too important to be impulsively altering the terrain without a sustainable PLAN.. What you are doing is a smaller scale but same principles .. here is their Youtube.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ub-I2m2PWAA.. I keep leaving long messages and you may be just overwhelmed with what you have taken on.. perhaps seasonal volunteers many be in your future?

  12. 👍🏻 yay! On the bamboo! Loved the video and watching Crusoe running around and helping …. Bamboos are massive here in Ecuador…. Used in a lot of constructions and which are amazing!! Keep up the good work…👍🏻💋

  13. I have a question? 🤔
    Were u born in Portugal?
Would love to visit your place, but I can in my dreams, just love the little guy,how he's just learning to talk 🥰

  14. Wow what a difference its really opened up the ground for you. I suppose Bamboo is a bit like Japanese Knotweed here in the UK, its so difficult to get rid of and any bits left behind just regrow. Its going to look great though. Gorgeous Crusoe just being such a cutie again! Dont work too hard in that heat guys. Love the video as always. Ooh and nearly forgot, I love the bed too, just so elegant!

  15. "Menina, obrigada! Tudo de bom!" I love that northern accent 😁 Portuguese is not easy, it has many irregular verbs but in no time you will be fluent. I had no idea that bamboo was such a pain and, after reading some comments, it really is a pain!! That bed is amazing, John did a great job 🙂

  16. Loving the bed, amazing work! You should build those and sell them. I'm so loving the chicken and duck and watching Crusoe toddle everywhere so happy is just a delight. Good luck with the bamboo, what a nightmare. Lots of love to you all. x

  17. Note – My experience with mosquito net and mosquito and flyes – keep the net over the bed always – else you will have flyes and mosquitos inside the net – then it is not funny anymore 🙂

  18. Re: Long Term Goals for your Property > Tourism > You could turn your property into a "Tree-house" Resort? AirBnb / Cottages / Cabins > Made out of Bamboo!
    > Bamboo Tree-houses….how cool would that be!

  19. John I love the bed you have made with your own hands , so Romantic. Tara before you know it you will be able to talk the language, I live in Italy it took me about a year to start picking up the beautiful language but here I am after 40 years I’m still here . Of cause your little one will pick it up in no time .I just love how he is so helpful with his mummy and daddy . What can I say that hasn’t been said about the bamboo, once you are rid of it I can just imagine all the new fruit trees you can add to your land . Love to you all . A fan from Italy .😃🌞

  20. Glad you've made a big effort to get rid of the bamboo, but please dont bury it because you'll be back to square one. Not sure if even wood chipping it would kill it off. Fingers crossed you get some breathing space for the stuff. All your plans sound amazing and love the new bed build, well done. Xxx
