Overthinking It subjects the popular culture to a level of scrutiny it probably doesn’t deserve.
It seems that lots of commenters here are missing the point when they say that this video is missing the point. The point of art is to provoke emotions and personal interpretations. The artists' intention and idea when creating their art is one thing, the other one is the way their art lives afterwards and is perceived and interpreted by the audience. All the various interpretations it later inspires with the audience is not something that artists can control or dictate once their creation is out, nor is it something they or their fans should endevour to do. Mahmood's and Blanco's interviews where they explain what the song is about (because they are being asked about it on every occasion) are not a part of this song, or of its live performance (objectively packed with great stage chemistry between the artists, which gives way to all of these various interpretations), and therefore cannot and should not influence the way each one of us members of the audience interpret it. And even more irrelevant is the real life sexual orientation of the artists, the way they do or don't label themselves, or the gender of people they are or aren't dating. Those fans who try to push all of this to the people who interpret this song as a gay love song, or performance, should be aware that it comes across as highly homophobic and intolerant in a more ample way. Let people enjoy art the way they feel it.
Maybe someone should write the lyrics in English for them and you can manage them in America 😉😊
I'll fight for you Mahmood
. but Blanco is straight.who cares I've been bisexual all my life.hardly shocking .I was surprised to find Blanco is straight and as a Stan dissapointed but I still love them and I'm buying into Brividi 💯 I love you Mahmood and Blanco 💚🤍❤️
1. first of all: make subtitles in your videos so we can understand well what you say.
2. Sanremo is not the italian selection for Esc. Festival of italian song in Sanremo is the oldest music contest in the world. Sanremo first edition was in 1951. So all the music contests that came after (the portuguese Festival da Cancao, the albanian Festival i kienges, the spanish Benidorm Fest, the Swedish Melodi Festivalen and all the other music contest of northern Europe) were on the model of Sanremo. And not only, the same Eurovision was invented by Italy on the model of Festival di Sanremo.
3. We don't sing in english, firt of all, because the rules of the Sanremo contest oblige to sing in italian because Sanremo is the contest of ITALIAN song. Then because italian idiom is known in all over the world ( italian people are in all over the world and for many years the Sanremo songs were accompanied by duets between italian and international artist. over all in the 60's. Artists as Gene Pitney, Paul Anka, Petula Clark, Udo Jurgens, Pat Boone, Cher, Dionne Warwick, Sonni Bono, Louis Armstrong, Shirley Bassey, Wilson Pickett, Steve Wonder, Sandie Show, Jose Feliciano, Luis Miguel, Las Ketchup, Lara Fabian, Youssou N'Dour, Gipsy Kings, Ray Charles and this year Ana Mena. Not to mention the numerous international guests who passed on the Sanremo stage.) And then Festival di Sanremo is known in all over the world and the italian songs are on the top of global charts even in italian language.
4. I see the referements on wikipedia about Frank Ocean. But he is one of the artists who influences Mahmood. Not the only. In italy we know Mahmood named his music genre as "morocco pop", that is a mix of italian traditional pop music with arab vibes.
5. It's not a gay duet. i try to explain you the meening of this song. There are 2 men: the first, Mahmoood, who speaks about a love relationship, with a man, and the second, Blanco, who speaks about a relationship with a woman. so they compared their relashionships and the impossibility and the difficulty to love. Because love is always love. same for a man who loves a man as for a man who loves a woman. Blanco is so masculine and his eyes are tipycal of italian street boy.
6. please document yourself a bit first to do a reaction or as Maneskin sing "shut up and behave because people speak but they don't shit know about what they speak.
bye my friend! Peace&Love!
Man, You're completely wrong. It's not a gay duet.
GO ITALY GO AND WIN AGAIN! THE SONG IS SO MUCH POWERFUL SO MUCH LOVE AND THE LYRIC THE MELODY THE ORCHESTRA THE VOICES AND THE CHEMISTRY…THERE IS SO MUCH EMOTIONS THAT AS YOU LISTEN THE SONG YOU START TO FEEL BRIVIDI YOU START TO CRY AND CRY AS YOU LISTEN SO AUTOMATIC…BECAUSE ITALIAN LANGUAGE IS SO MUSICAL AND MOST BEAUTIFUL IT’S A POETRY AND KNOWS HOW TO SING LOVE AND EXPRESS IT…
to tell the truth, Brividi has overtaken zitti e buoni in Italy, and was positioned at number 15 on Billboard E.x. Usa.
Let's repeat it for the thousandth time: The Sanremo Festival is not a selection for Eurovision. The Sanremo Festival was born before the Eurovision song contest and can boast a superior history in terms of prestige for the singers who have performed there, Italians and even international stars.
Okay.. . you've singlehandedly Changed my opinion of the song.
As a big fan of Mahmood's unique music, I was rather underwhelmed by Brividi, not gonna lie.
But your analysis made me see how much thought and details were put into it.
Thank you!
afaik Eurovision was not yet as much of a gay fest as it is today in the 90's
Triggering Tuck Carlson it's too easy 😀
Brividi in inglese? Per carità, mille volte meglio in italiano.
Music has to be creative, sometimes shocking, always different … this is why I like this song, this is why I loved Queen, Bowie, Prince, Dylan….
Now, haven't we had enough electro-pop made in studio by a software? Same rhythm, same simple meaningless lyrics?
Italian is a very suitable language for expressing deep feelings, an English version wouldn't have the same impact.
Italy brings quality every year. I'm so pleased they sing in Italian… Italian entries always have poetic lyrics. It's a pity more people don't understand the sophistication of Italian lyrics combined with kick ass music.. Eurovision already has too many songs with silly or generic English lyrics taly keep doing what you're doing You deserve to win!
Why a song in english should be better? So limited idea.
The show is back 😍🥰
Brividi is gorgeous.
Can you analyse Sweden hold me closer by Cornelia Jakobs next?
the problem is that everybody feel like it’s their right to discuss sexual orientations of singers and that their private life is a public matter, not understanding the massage they want to convey with the song not necessary has to relate to it. People act as if in the mv is displaying their actual stories or represent their actual partners instead of actors. The mv is only the representation of the message they want to give. They purposely choose to give to the song a neutral and universal meaning, representing two different relationships but that have the same problems, portraying them as equal. The ultimate purpose is to only notice two relationships, and not focusing on who love who. You are all categorizing an artist that always refused any label as if is the most normal things to do. As in the other hand it’s useful to the matter to underline if one has a girlfriend or not. Sexual orientations is not relevant whatsoever here… it shouldn’t been in the equation in a way or in the other: if they are singing to each other and sharing affection it doesn’t mean they are displaying mtml. They are sharing the emotions of the song and of the stage and they are normalizing that even male friends can show their affection to one another
. We would never been here discussing this if they were two female singing hand in hand, because it’s all more acceptable that female friends can be tender to each other while men still define their sexuality with the old stereotypes: you are gentle and hug your friend in public? Yeah definitely gay…you like fights in the mud? Super straight. Your interpretation is wrong simply because they said numerous times, and the translation confirm it, the song is about two different stories from their personal life (intentional neutral), written separately, that find a common ground in the incapability of expressing their feelings and being misunderstood in a relationship. It’s the words they choose that doesn’t make it a dialogue, but two monologues that melt in the refrain and its quite clear for mother tongues. the song, like that, gets a much more universal meaning that make it much more interesting, because with disarming simplicity they show we are all in the same ship. A massage that surprisingly passed really easily in Italy, without any question about their performance or the mv, as it was the most normal things in the world as it should be. I end up saying why we must put people into boxes? Why we need to label everything? If someone feel the need to clarify it, go for it… but in this case what’s the need?
Amazing analysis but you ruined it in the end by stating that it would be better in English. No it wouldn't be.
Interesting, I didn’t interpret it the same way at all.
😍♥
I liked your analysis of how this song plays with different rhythms and melodies. I don't normally like Eurovision's slow songs about romantic woes, but this one is better than most.
…and you're right. It is kind of odd how few Eurovision songs are this explicitly about a same-sex relationship given how many entries are campy, feature LGBTQ performers, or directly depict queer content in their music videos or stage performances.
Italian lyrics>>>>> English lyrics . Let this sink in
I think a lot of people are missing the point because they're hung up on the idea that two artists in a romantic duet must be in a relationship with eachother, which is garbage.
This is 100% a mlm love song, and yes Blanco is dating a woman. These things are not mutually exclusive.
Many do not understand that the Sanremo Festival is not the selection for ESC, but it is a contest that honors the Italian song, and not the singers who may also be little known or old glories of the past. The winner has the opportunity to agree to represent Italy at Eurovision. In 2016 the Stadio won Sanremo but refused to participate in the ESC. The song that participates in the Festival must be unpublished, must be in Italian, must be performed live, must be accompanied by the orchestra. This already makes it clear that it is not produced for ESC, also you can use the autotune, there is no censorship in the text and there is no limit of 3 minutes. BRIVIDI for ESC will have to be modified because it is longer and because it contains an expression that is not allowed; at the ESC you will not be able to count on the presence of the orchestra which gives an important touch to the Sanremo Festival. However it will go to the ESC, this song has already been successful having conquered many hearts, Italian and not. In the many interviews the two singers have repeatedly said that each has expressed his point of view on the difficulty of loving, which is not a dialogue between them.
answering your question: Blanco is straight, he has a beatifull GF for a while
Loved this video! And I love even more how european fans kinda disagree with your opinion (about gay love song). That possibility of ambiguous, layered analysis is the best!
I really hope that you will analyze Serbian entry for esc. Eager to see that 😉
Wait, you're back???? Omg why didn't youtube warn me!!! Subscribed so it doesn't happen again. Welcome back!!!
I am SO glad you all are back doing Eurovision videos this year! Thank you! 🙂
ups…
Well, Italian news sources say that Blanco has a girlfriend named Giulia. 🙂
uhmm they’re not serenading each others, they’re talking about their own love stories, they even stated it in plenty of interviews (and Blanco is also straight) 😩
It has already charted in the US by the way
I completely agree with an earlier comment here – this is not a "gay love song". It may have missed your radar completely but Blanco happens to be straight. There is a provocative homoerotic tease to the performance, sure (#vote winner) but (and I say this as a gay man) for me this song is two men singing about their respective relationships. Check the official video where Mahmood has his intimate scenes with a completely different male actor, Blanco is seen in the company of a woman with long hair..
The message of the song, more realistically, is that conflicts and pain within relationships are universal, regardless of the orientation of the people involved. As Ryan O'Shaughnessy said, at the end of his performance in 2018 (the one with the gay dancers!), "Love is Love" BTW – TOTALLY love your channel, right up there with my 'go to' Eurovision content every year. Keep up the fantastic work.😊
how many inaccuracies said lightly.
Yall still alive?
I think you're making this song "smaller" than it is when saying it's a gay love song: the whole idea of having these two sing it looks more like a way of saying that this is something shared in all relations, no matter the sexual orientation. They are not singing
toone another, they are sharing one text that could be sang by one person: one is appearing as an openly straight person (and maybe open minded?), the other as mostly homosexual (but potentially open minded?), and they share this feeling of being unable to express their feelings in a relation. No matter if it's a straight, homosexual or any other type of relation. It's universal, and having two persons with different orientations sharing that text does highlight this universality. At least this is my view, and a big part of why I like this song: it is meant to everyone, in all types of relations.
Wonderfull and emotional song ! Winners 🏆🏆🇮🇹🇮🇹
It is unlikely that the Italian song will be sung in English because the selection for Eurovision takes place through the Sanremo festival where by regulation only Italian songs can participate, however, nice review 😊
Omg this is my favourite Eurovision Channel talking about my favourite Eurovision song
