Lyrics:

Momma please stop cryin, I can’t stand the sound
Your pain is painful and its tearin’ me down
I hear glasses breakin as I sit up in my bed
I told dad you didn’t mean those nasty things you
said

You fight about money, bout me and my brother
And this I come home to, this is my shelter
It ain’t easy growin up in World War III
Never knowin what love could be, you’ll see
I don’t want love to destroy me like it has done
my family

Can we work it out? Can we be a family?
I promise I’ll be better, Mommy I’ll do anything
Can we work it out? Can we be a family?
I promise I’ll be better, Daddy please don’t
leave”

  2. Found this so healing when I was little. Got me through my parents divorce which was messy as f. Thank you Pink for showing me what a strong, determined woman looks like ! I've admired you since I was a child in the 90s. Most girls- taught me so much!

Make mama stop crying, 'cause I need you around
My mama she loves you (I know it), no matter what she says it's true
I know that she hurts you, but remember I love you, too

I ran away today, ran from the noise, ran away
Don't wanna go back to that place, but don't have no choice, no way
It ain't easy growing up in World War III
Never knowing what love could be, well, I've seen

In our family portrait (in our family portrait)
We look pretty happy (w look pretty happy)
Let's play pretend, let's act like it comes naturally
I don't wanna have to split the holidays
    I don't want two addresses
    I don't want a step-brother anyways
And I don't want my mom to have to change her last name

In our family portrait, we look pretty happy
We look pretty normal, let's go back to that

    Mom will be nicer
    I'll be so much better
    I'll tell my brother
Oh, I won't spill the milk at dinner
I'll be so much better, I'll do everything right
I'll be your little girl forever
I'll go to sleep at night

  4. This hits sooo hard, because my kid has had a very similar way of growing up, but it was a heck of another situation, but still as "shame" for everything and "playing happy".
Oof, this hurts so much, I'm going to send this video to my tween, and apologize if I ever made them feel like that, I never ever meant it.

…I just had to write that, after listening to it 3 times in a row…

  5. My mum amd dad was like that when I was younger it would have been better if they had got a divorce instead they tried to make it work but they didn't it didn't effect my brothers so much as they weren't home so much nut for me it did effect me to this day still when my grandparents were alive I would just go down there to get away from it sometimes didn't want to go home they eventually divorce but it was too late

  6. This song hit hard in the choas of my childhood home and I still carry those scars with me. My ex and I split and broke the cycle before we put our daughter through the same. I'm not saying divorce is always the solution but for us, it was the only way to break the trauma cycle both our families had put us through. Our daughter has two loving homes with two present and involved parents and my ex and I have a good friendship now. We just didn't have the tools we needed to break the cycle.
