Portugal and the transatlantic slave trade from Africa to Europe

The experience of enslaved people from Africa has left an indelible mark on the history and culture of Portugal including Fado music. Starting in the 15th Century, Portugal helped drive the transatlantic slave trade from West Africa. To ensure their rights are protected as a special victim group, the United Nations declared 2015 – 2024 an International Decade for People of African Descent.

  1. In Portugal the slaves of the past were the white European natives, the African slaves were almost non-existent, they had no expression, the Africans in Portugal came from the former colonies by plane in search of a better life, they were never slaves, Portugal is not America

  2. African slavery was not exclusive to the Americas. It was also practiced in Europe to a lesser extent. Off the coast of Africa also had slaves. So did India and the Middle East.

  3. Just like the Americans and the French (and the Dutch, Germans, British, Italians, and Spanish) , they're willing to "acknowledge and remember it" but not compensate for it. It's like acknowledging that you ate at a great restaurant as you walk out without paying.

  4. Portugal must recognize the Atlantic slavery trade as a Crime against Humanity, that’s the first step for Portugal 🇵🇹 to repair the victims of this trade, secondly to teach this history in Portuguese schools and universities, and thirdly to build a Slavery trade museum in Portugal to show that history. Because It’s not sufficient to give Black African names to roads in Lisbon for a country like Portugal 🇵🇹 which had a lot of beneficiaries from Atlantic slavery trade. The UN Portuguese General Secretary Antônio Gutteres needs to push his country in this direction to do more about the History and the mermory of European slavery trade.

  5. It is necessary to correct this video, this is the falsification of history, the first enslaved from Portugal to the Portuguese European territory and Portuguese islands of Madeiras, Azores not only came from West Africa, but also from Central Africa with the largest contingent coming from the port of Bulambemba, an island 🏝 of the Kongo River, an area at that time which was the area of the powerful Kingdom of Kongo in 1418 until to 1510, when the king’s Spain 🇪🇸 Fernando o Católico signed the decree 📜 to give power to Portuguese businessmen established in Kongo Kingdom to export enslaved Bantu Kongo peoples in the Spanish colonies in America. Let’s say the truth history not this falsified version of this video. Central Africa remains the big area where came from many Africans in America during the Atlantic slavery trade: we can see the proofs today by many cultural aspects: o Samba in Brazil 🇧🇷, Brazilian Candomblé Congo Angola religion, Maracatu festival in Brazil, all these cultural aspects come from Kongo Kingdom, in USA 🇺🇸 we’ve Gullah language where we find many Kikongo words, and others cultural aspects of Kongo origin in America which show that Bantu Peoples from central Africa were many and a majority African group in slavery trade.
