Portugal is a nation with its gaze turned outward, jutting into the Atlantic Ocean on the edge of the Iberian Peninsula and flanked to the east by Spain. Its history is rife with exploration and discovery, dating back to early leaders who, after driving out Celtic and Moorish settlers in the 12th century, focused on expanding their kingdom beyond continental borders. The westernmost country in continental Europe used its maritime power to colonize and forge trade routes to India, China, Japan, and the African coasts. Throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, legendary explorers such as Bartholomeu Dias, Vasco da Gama, Christopher Columbus, and Ferdinand Magellan sailed under Portuguese masts, their journeys blessed by ambitious monarchs. Portugal’s current population is 80 percent Roman Catholic. After an earthquake ravaged the capital, Lisbon, in 1755, the Discovery Age behemoth was thrown into economic turmoil, a fall from which Portugal has never fully recovered. The nation’s strained economy was pushed into steeper decline with the independence of its wealthiest colony, Brazil, in 1822, and the flood of emigrants returning home as other African and Asian colonies were relinquished over the next century.
Portugal is still plagued by financial problems. While the country’s budget deficit is decreasing, it remains significantly higher than the European Union’s accepted rate, and financial assistance received from the European Commission and the International Monetary Fund in 2011 is still being repaid. Portugal’s public debt is expected to fall to 121.1 percent of GDP by 2019, down from 130 percent at the end of 2016. The country’s GDP per capita is among the lowest among wealthy nations, and unemployment is high in this heavily service-based economy. Portugal is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination, thanks to its long stretches of beach, mild climate, and 15 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Militaristic dictatorships that had exploited a nation in crisis were finally overthrown in 1974, and democracy was established. Portugal handed over its last remaining colony, Macau, to China in 1999, reducing the once vast global empire to a nation of about 10 million people, heavily concentrated around Lisbon and the nearby coastal region. NATO, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the European Free Trade Association are all founding members of Portugal. It also belongs to the World Bank and the World Trade Organization.
