STORYLINE
Passengers at Lisbon Airport faced delays and flight cancellations on Tuesday amid ongoing disruptions at European Airports.
On Monday, Portuguese authorities put in place a summer contingency plan at the country’s airports, promising unprecedented staffing levels at passport control.
At Lisbon Airport the situation was critical over the weekend with dozens of flights cancelled and long queues, but the situation appears to be returning back to normal with only a few constraints due to daily flight cancellations.
Similar scenes have occurred across Europe and at airports in the United States.
Portuguese authorities have given a variety of reasons for the disruption, including an unanticipated surge in travelers, cancellations elsewhere in Europe having a knock-on effect, and staff shortages.
The government said the new airport plan is a response to “exponential” increase in arrivals, as travel has boomed after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wider use of electronic passport gates, more support staff to help passengers and improved information services are also being promised for the summer.
