Portugal Residence Permit | How to Apply for the Biometric Card?

As non EU citizens from the UK living in Portugal we are now required to have full residency to continue to live a sunny life in the Algarve.

Applying for the Biometric card to complete our Portugal residence permit was quick and easy.

The biometric card appointment itself was pretty fast, with most of the family being in and out within 15 minutes.

On arrival you will need a valid passport, NIF document, original residency documents and your NISS number if you have it.

I would recommend arriving 20 minutes before your appointment with a pen as you will have to fill in a short form to confirm your details.

If you have not yet started the process for your Portuguese residency permit to become portuguese residents and you want to live in Portugal as UK citizen you will now be required to have a valid residence Visa.

There are two types of residency visa availabe for UK citizens wanting to stay in Portugal. These include:

Temporary Stay National Visas – If you are looking to stay in Portugal for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for a Temporary Stay visa that allows you to stay in Portugal for up to a year. There are many types of Temporary residence permit such as a temporary work visa, a study visa, professional training or internship visa, medical treatment visa are just to name a few.

Long Stay National Visa – A Long Stay National visa, also known as a Residency visa, allows stays of over a year long. To apply for this portuguese residence visa, you will have to apply for a portuguese residence permit with the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF). There are multiple types of long-stay national visas including a work visa, study visa, professional training or internship visa, family reunion visa, Portugal Golden Visa, Portugal D7 Visa, and a D2 Entrepreneur Visa.
