About Valença:
Valença do Minho, in Portugal across the border formed by the Minho River, was originally a fortress town built to protect the frontier from Spanish incursion. Now, Spanish incursion is encouraged; indeed, Spaniards cross into this little town to purchase its renowned textiles, especially its terry cloth.
The fortress is one of the most popular attractions in Portugal. The old town is surrounded by its huge stone ramparts. Here you’ll find narrow alleys – and the textile shops. This little market district is well known for its garments and typical Portuguese souvenirs like gold jewelry, pottery, lingerie and wine.
Beyond the shopping opportunities, the fortress affords visitors magnificient views of the Minho River and the surrounding countryside, as well as the comparatively new part (the ramparts and old town were built in the 18th century) of Valenca.
Valença elevated its status from Vila to City in 2009. A City with all services; schools; university; hospital and health center; supermarkets; restaurants; coffee shops; bars with nightlife and much more. It is as far north you can travel in Portugal by train and has several bus routes to get around Portugal. There is a daily express bus, that will get you there in an hour, and goes back and forth to Porto several times during the day.
Nearby are the fortified villages of Monçao, Vila Nova de Cerveira and Caminha. In addition to Valença they all confront with the Minho River that separates Portugal and the Galician Region of Spain. Monção is known for its hot springs and accompanying health spa. Vila Nova de Cerveira is known as “Vila das Artes” due to its rich culture with the arts. Caminha is still a quaint fishing village with curio shops and a bustling lace industry.
