Preparing the Space Part 1 | Cleaning-Up | My Central Portugal Farm #27

The clean-up commences so we can move to the farm. I decided to stay at an Airbnb for a week with the pups while I start cleaning up the structure and getting the basics ready and implemented to make it liveable. We have one week to get everything done. From cleaning to creating a space to sleep, storage for food, food preparation space a toilet facility and everything in between.

Part 1 is the clean-up process, part 2 will be the basic utility builds and then we move in!

About Girl Meets Farm:
I’m Christine. I started this journey in search of my forever farm in Portugal, and now I have found it!

This is my adventure as a solo expat on a farm in Central Portugal with my two fur-kids, Shakti & Shiva.
I’ve never owned or lived on a farm, but moved to Portugal in the hope of fulfilling a life-long dream of finding open space, subsistence farming and a safer, better life.

Now that we have found our farm, the second stage of our journey begins!
I have to figure out farm life while renovating an agricultural structure to make it habitable and turn it into a comfortable home for me and my furkids.

Thank you for joining our journey!

  1. What better way to have a lift up when you see the furniture shining back at you… it gives a instant civilized vibe…way to go girl. I saw the white walls and I immediately thought you were to white wash them for instant brightness..but I think you will 🙂

  2. very proud of you, great job. i recommend you wash with a mix of vinegar and baking soda…its great to kill mold (whiten those dark stains) and not toxic like household cleaners. plus its so much cheaper. if you want a nicer smell you can put some lemonjuice, or lavender flowers, it is a fantastic cleaner and gentler on our skin and the environment and your dogs noses☺

  3. You are doing a good job, don't worry about the spiders, they'll find their way back, annoying but harmless.
As for the walls, you could whitewash them with "cal". I think it's called lime in English.
It's a white powdery type of soft rock that you put into water and it reacts with the water and starts boiling and gets VERY, VERY hot. When it's fully dissolved you paint the walls with it with a thick brush. It cleans, desinfects and looks all white and good after it dries out.
Ask your neighbours or in nearest town where can you buy CAL to paint walls = "Onde posso comprar cal para caiar paredes?"
Usually sold in shops called "drogarias" or building merchants. I think you'll need 2 or 3 kilos for two layers on all walls. Very cheap. Also buy a brush sold at same place: "Um pincel para caiar paredes."
CAREFUL: Start by putting half a kilo of CAL into a bucket of water and let it dissolve by itself. Stir occasionally with a long stick. Don't burn yourself. When it's dissolved it should be like a thick milk, if too thin add a bit more "cal" and wait for it to dissolve.
Paint away liberally. When wet it looks grey & dirty on walls but once it dries up it's magnificient white.
No need to wash & scrub walls first. It'll kill anything including mould.
Any mixture left can be used the next days. Also good for outside walls. Leftover is also good to put on earth around olive trees, improves the soil.
Wear old clothes, protect hands with handcream before you start applying and protect foor (with newspaper) to avoid drops. Any drops can also be cleaned away while still fresh. After drying out its more difficult to clean.
    Good luck!

  4. These projects are so enticing, makes me wanna be there too 😂 the Karcher power washer u have can suck water out of a bucket just plug the hose to machine and leave other end in a bucket of water, sometimes u might need a filter type jig but that’s optional. U should give it a try

  5. The opening of the window 😍😍 you found a beautiful place, can't wait to see it be transformed into your home! Sending love and positive vibes from Malta.
Not perfect, but better is my life's mantra chasing after 2 kids that are constantly making a mess haha the best one was when they got into a bucket of dry concrete 😬

  6. I would have moved in right away 🙂 that is just how cheap I am.
Did a video on a Ryobi battery power washer,, not long ago,, it would have been perfect for this smaller job, and no water pressure was needed, it can suck the water up from a bucket 🙂
Can you share what you do for a living,, sort of work?
Your new car is way to fancy, for all the building stuff you are going to need :-/ You need a trailer for it 🙂

  7. 'Not Perfect BUT Better'!!!!!! I loved that motto!!!! and a great start to your restoration journey….hard work I am sure but very satisfying I am sure!!!! Dining chairs looked fantastic!!!! I am sure you are going to thoroughly make a grand success of your fabulous new home …Well Done and GREAT GREAT Video 👍👍👍👍👍👌👏👏

  8. Hi Christine, since you gonna start renovating the place, you gonna have have to purchase power tools.
I would suggest you to go for battery powered tools instead of corded ones.
More expensive but way more practical.

I would also suggest to get Ryobi, I have myself Einhell m, it's cheaper than Ryobi but the built quality isn't that good which could be quite frustrating.

  9. Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love you,i would just go living there saves you lots of money and your dogs don't have to walk the stairs, get a Coker a gas bottle and what you need more and start injoying your new farm.

  10. You tackled a huge cleaning job head-on and came out the winner!
The before and after pics of the walls, floors and inside of the roof … can definitely see the big improvement.
Looking great and love your motto!!
The chairs and cabinets looking very good after the cleaning and oiling.
Pity about the pressure washer connection.
Looks like the dogs enjoyed this whole cleaning up 'game' as well😁
Very innovative idea for 'interim' toilet and fortunately it is so hot there at the moment that you are probably very happy with the 'fresh air' camping shower!
    Admire your dedication.
PS: The strawberries and figs look devine!
    Looking forward to Part 2

  11. Love the new “Intro”
Pity you were not able to MaGyver the water fitting to the pressure washer, but hey… a bit of sweat labour never hurt anyone. Hahaha 🤪.
For the moment, A basic frame to hold a toilet seat, a bucket and a bag of sawdust will suffice.
Great positive attitude. Keep it up. Vineyard looking vibrant and lush.

  12. Hi, wow how brave are you moving to a new country and a new way of life, would love to have done what you are doing but too old now.
The rooms are looking so much better, I remember on your other video how many webs there were. You have worked so hard on the cleaning, and the chairs, what an improvement.
Can’t wait for your videos as looking forward so much to following you on your journey.
Keep up the good work, but don’t forget to take a break, maybe with a nice glass of South African red. Tony UK x

  13. I think the wall wash was a good idea, but before you paint it, with your chosen colour, you might want to use a anti mouldex paint under coat, that has a damp proof property, I would do the entire bottom of the walls up to waist high, just in case in super rainey weather, you get a roof leak you don't want to get a damp/ mould problem, then let that dry for a few days, before painting your walls. With it not being a large space, you would want a light colour, the white is an obvious choice, or a very light colour either way you sleep better now, knowing 'Incey Wincey spider ' has been dispatched to the garden area.🤣🤣🤣

  14. Hi there, you were saying that you couldn't find a tap to fit your power washer, but I couldn't help but notice the washing machine tap that has the screw fitting for that purpose right under the green window you opened. You might have to buy a hose connection which is 2 or 3 euros at any Chinese bazaar, but then you're good to go. Hope this helped.

  15. Wonderful! Heck, I would have a tent and be camping. How can you contain yourself? The chairs…any loose joints should be mended with wood glue. Tooth picks or small paint brushes can be used to force glue inside the joints. Wrapping the frames/joints tightly with cord or even bungee cords will act as a clamp while the glue sets. Wood draws moisture from concrete, so small plastic/rubber caps for the feet will help protect the furniture. Shop Vac aka spider hunter, you go girl!!! My life's dream is to live somewhere warm and have a well built outdoor shower! Thanks for the update and please don't over do. I'm sure you'll be settled in time to harvest the few tons of grapes…hehehehehe. Thanks again.
