Prepping to go LIVING OFF-GRID while self-building our Dream HOME & HOMESTEAD in North Portugal 💦 💧💦

The clock is ticking! In just 11 days, we’re scheduled to move into our self-built wooden cabin in North Portugal. Our Dream house is up ✔️, because we’ve been building non-stop for the past 52 days. BUT we’re waiting on grid connection – this means we’re prepping to go off-grid and start a homestead in drought season. This week is all about raising our comfort level while living on site and finishing building our dream home when we live on the land. In this video, you’ll see us install the vapor barrier on our rock wool insulation ✔️, connect the IBC tanks ✔️, and install the missing doors and windows ✔️. We’ve also made a big mistake with one of our orders – let’s see how we’ll overcome this!

27 weeks ago, we bought an abandoned farm in Tras-os-montes, North Portugal, and we’re building our dream place with a public garden, an ice cream kiosk, and our dream house, optimized towards minimalist yet comfortable living.

We left the Rat trace for a simple life in North Portugal. And this is a slice of our dream and a new simple life.

  1. Hazel ☘️ …

What amazing progress and house build … you work so well together and always give us a great explanation of what you are doing and why 👍

It’s never the right time to move on site … but I find living there enables you really embrace your build and it’s surroundings and feel / hear how it “wants” to be .

The heat has been intense and I really take my hat of to you for enduring and still work through !

I spent 12 weeks in my caravan (May to July) on a temporary site, unshaded, and I was baked ! … I need to site it permanently and build a caravan port for sure !

Watching your build I am confident it will provide temperature control in all seasons … great forward planning indeed …

    Two hair cycles … interesting ! 😀

    Have a great week
    🙏☘️😘

  2. Another wonderful update, goes to show that fun and hard work can go together. You are now so close to the finishing line. All the best for the last few days now. 👍🏼👍🏼

  3. Greetings Sindy and Dan, every week your house becomes a little more "alive" You two have been working through some horrible heat. So glad you took some time out recently you needed that. I think you will be happy to be living on site, no more travelling and bringing things to and from the site. I hope that the weather cools down soon for you . Hey Boyz nice to see you, Mason you look very handsome after your trip to the "beauty salon" . Gruff so you had fun with "mum" teasing you your coat is much nicer than that horse hair. ( I remember my father using horse hair for the same purpose). Take care you two, Cheers.

  4. In watching you build your home, I realize that a new build seems to go quicker than an old stone barn restoration. I think another advantage is that you can install insulation. Good luck to you both.

  5. I love the window doors! BTW baldness is passed along by the mama,s genes and, in the event of balding, you can whip up a natural herbal remedy to stop the balding and restore the hair. Just in case 😉

  6. Dan, one future idea is if you hair falls out on top, let your eyebrows grow out and comb them back. Just an idea. lol. My husband ask me when his hair started to thin on top would it bother me if he lost it all. I told him I didn't marry him for his hair. He was ok with that. You both have done so much for so long, can't wait until you get to living in your new house. Everything is coming together so nicely. Glad your home is water tight now. Love the choice of doors and windows. See you next week. Thanks for sharing.
