Dr. Adriana Garriga-López, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Kalamazoo College & Adjunct Professor at the University of Puerto Rico, Cayey campus, joined The Freedom Side Live to break down the context of the protests, their demands, and what it means for the future of Puerto Rico.

Monetary Sovereignty.
Stop feed the Bank of England system.
Perfectly explained. Free Puerto Rico !!
Boricuas are engaging in resistance in the streets, despite the fact that they voted in a so-called democratic elections of 2020 in Boriken. Isn’t it obvious that these elections are not about governing Boriken for 100% of the Boricuas? Do you know that the United States government (USG) is committing a crime against humanity by continuing to have Puerto Rico as its colony?
Do you that the United Nations’ (UN) Charter of 1945 prohibits colonialism, and that the UN is in its 4th International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism? Do you know that the USG has ignored, up to this moment, 40 UN resolutions asking it to immediately return Puerto Rico’s sovereignty to the Puerto Ricans? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otzBslJLbI0. And, do you know that the world considers the USG as the biggest threat to peace? The 9 million Boricuas worldwide should all engage in massive permanent resistance, wherever we reside, to force the USG to comply with international law! Push the US to respect the rule of law!
America is saying too other countries to stay away from Chinese investments. Look what Wall Street has done to Puerto Rico, Greece and Italy. The American imperialism and it’s questionable businesses practice. This is why countries are looking else where besides the US business community.
Great work folks … again…a shame you couldn't find a bit of sympathy for the workers strike in Canada….amazing you didn't look deeper into the situation…..As a 70 year old lifelong leftist I was able to overcome the propaganda of the fascists authoritarians and suss out what the real truth is…. From young intelligent anti imperialists I expect the same type of scrutiny….keep up the good work…..
As long as Puerto Ricans continue to accept their colonial status while rejecting independence all those demonstrations will be useless. The vast majority of Puerto Ricans value their US citizenship more than their identity as Puerto Ricans. Politicians in Puerto Rico compete to see who can squeeze more money from USA without presenting to the public any plan of job development .The people from that island see Americans as gods and they are "proud" to worship them.

Is it ok for a gringo to buy property in PR and rent it out at affordable rates? I’d love to buy there but I don’t want to contribute to this colonialization. However property is crazy expensive in USA so how else can we buy something. So I’m curious to get the thoughts of you all if renting at low rates would be acceptable
It's disgraceful that the USA, the UK, and France still have colonies! What year is this?
A living wage and basic dignity seems to be absent in the global economy
The communists unions and the politicians are the problem. LUMA is necessary to get rid of the corrupt UTIER. The protests are for better salaries.
UPR has a 1.5 billions budget for only 45,000 students.
Puerto Ricans doesn't want anything to do with leftists. The problem isn't the fiscal control board but the corrupt politicians.
What would change under statehood? By me oppression will continue because we are people of color and a minority.
I have this enduring image of Donald trump throwing toilet rolls in a crowd of desperate people after that hurricane. Such disrespect to Puerto Rican's. We see this all the time in the capitalist system where poor rundown areas are redeveloped, which is a euphemism for kicking the poor people out and building luxury condo's.. Cuba was suffering the same fate until Castro came along and through out all the wealthy capitalists.. How can anyone support a system that relies on the expoitation of others to sustain itself?
Young Lords!!!
You go portarico!
The only way to save Puerto Rico from this debt is to do what Argentina has done but the only way for us to seek help from other countries is to become independent from US and statehood isn't the answer, wake the fuck up my fellow Puerto Ricans and fight for independence, just like Cuba did back in 1959.
Naked colonialism. The US is shameless – this is the 21st century!?
The relationship between the US and Puerto Rico has been extremely extractive and anti-Democratic since Puerto Rico became a US territory. Highly recommend the book War against All Puerto Ricans for a brief history on the subject. The title is taken from a quote by the Puerto Rican Chief of Police Francis Riggs, who promised that “There will be war to the death against all Puerto Ricans.” and fulfilled the process with a mass killing of protesting Puerto Ricans.
happy to see this video, this needs so much more support. sad but expected that American media wont talk about this.. free puerto rico!
Viva Cuban independence for Puerto rico
Puerto Rico has gone through a process of indoctrination, brainwashing, and feeling of worthlessness over 100 years, created by the US and ignoramus in the Island.
Well that is a making of Puertoricans themselves. Took Rosello out and left the same party in power. It's a crying shame
Enjoyed your speaker. She gave a great deal of important information. Thank you.
